Iranian human rights defender and freedom fighter Narges Mohammadi has been awarded the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize, the prize’s organizers announced on Friday.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee, which awards the prize, praised her “fight against the oppression of women in Iran and the fight to promote human rights and freedoms for all people.”

“In total, the regime arrested her 13 times, convicted her five times, and sentenced her to a total of 31 years in prison and 154 lashes,” the newspaper emphasized. Mohammadi remains in prison.

The award also “recognizes the hundreds of thousands of people who have demonstrated against the theocratic regime’s discriminatory and repressive policies against women,” the committee said.

Iran is also attracting attention from various Hollywood stars. For example, earlier this year, Cate Blanchett, Jason Momoa, Samuel L. He was a member of the entertainment industry who publicly supported calls to end executions.

Before the winner was announced, bookmakers had named favorites including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, Pope Francis, environmental activist Greta Thunberg, British broadcaster David Attenborough and the World Health Organization.

This honor is one of five Nobel Prizes created in 1895 by the will of dynamite inventor Alfred Nobel. Other awards are in chemistry, physics, medicine, and literature.

Past Nobel Peace Prize winners include Barack Obama, Al Gore, Jimmy Carter, Malala Yousafzai, Nelson Mandela, Mikhail Gorbachev, Mother Teresa, Aung San Suu Kyi, Elie Wiesel, Includes the United Nations and the European Union.

Last year, the award went to Belarusian human rights activist Ales Biaryatsky, Russian human rights group Memorial, and Ukrainian human rights group Civil Liberties Center.

In 2021, this honor went to Maria Ressa and Dmitry Muratov for their “efforts to protect freedom of expression, which is a precondition for democracy and lasting peace.” They received the Peace Prize for their “courageous fight for freedom of expression in the Philippines and Russia.” In 2020, this honor was awarded to the World Food Programme, the food assistance arm of the United Nations, considered the world’s largest humanitarian organization fighting hunger and promoting food security.

There were many candidates for the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize. However, as usual, the Norwegian Nobel Committee did not reveal the names of the nominees or nominees for the Nobel Peace Prize. This will only happen after 50 years.
