Guillermo del Toro talks about GODZILLA MINUS ONE and his struggles getting his films released in Hollywood — GeekTyrant
exit Guillermo del Toro He recently shared his thoughts on Godzilla minus oneWhich he calls a “brilliant” film. One of the things that struck him most was the fact that it was a film about the post-World War II era, and that inspired him to open up about his experiences trying to get a period film out in Hollywood. As you might imagine, studio executives weren’t interested. Del Toro participated in X:
A bit of memory: When I watched the wonderful GODZILLA MINUS ONE, my first impression was that it was a period piece. necessarily so. I remembered my early days, when Mark Frost and I developed the 7-list for Universal. When we presented it, they said – “But – this is Victorian…” And I agreed, of course, and said: “But it was shot in a modern way, with great mood and movement!” They received the response: “People don’t care about old pieces.”
The project he is talking about here is List of sevenwhich could have been an adaptation of Mark Frost’s 1993 novel of the same name.
The story takes place in Victorian England, and follows the adventures of Arthur Conan Doyle, the famous author of Sherlock Holmes, as he becomes involved in a series of mysterious and deadly events. Doyle teams up with Jack Sparks, a brilliant and mysterious detective, to uncover a complex conspiracy involving a secret society known as the List of Seven. As they delve deeper into the conspiracy, they discover dark secrets, supernatural elements, and a web of intrigue. Which threatens their lives and the course of history itself. Mark Frost’s novel combines historical fiction, mystery, and supernatural elements to create an exciting and suspenseful story. Del Toro continued:
I replied: What about Raiders of the Lost Ark? They validated my parking. This was around 1995 or so. I think my brave CEOs are Carr D’Angelo and Barry Josephson. Oh, there are so many good movies that will never get made… Both Barry and Carr supported the movie wholeheartedly – it was upper management that scuttled it. I was being completely unironic – we’ve been trying for years.
That would have been a great movie! It’s unfortunate that so many people with no creative vision run Hollywood. I mean, just look at this fucking Godzilla vs. Kong The movie is coming out! You might think that studio executives and filmmakers had never seen a Godzilla movie before.
However, del Toro managed to produce some landmark films in his career such as The Shape of Water, Pan’s LabyrinthAnd Nightmare alley. He also finally started making it Frankenstein film! However, some of his film offers are still rejected! He has previously described the filmmaking process as “frustratingly difficult” and likened it to “eating a shit sandwich”.
