Mai Whelan can now celebrate her well-deserved victory as she officially received her long-awaited payday after triumphing in Netflix’s Squid Game: The Challenge. The immigration judge won a historic $4.56 million prize, besting 455 other contestants in a demanding test inspired by the acclaimed Korean drama series Squid Games, People has confirmed.

Addressing misconceptions in Whelan’s Squid Game Prize

Contrary to Whelan’s earlier claim of a 10-month delay in receiving the funds, People confirmed that Whelan was aware of a payment schedule that indicated he would receive the prize money after the show’s first season finale.

In December 2023, Whelan compared his anticipation for the prize to a Jerry Maguire scene, telling The Times: “I feel like Tom Cruise in Jerry Maguire, show me the money!”

During that time, he shared with the publication that he had already set aside a portion of the expected profits for a renewed look at the Squid Game Gala. This makeover included a new short haircut, a Ralph Lauren dress and Jimmy Choo shoes.

Aspirations beyond the game

The Virginia native shared her post-win plans, expressing her desire to move into a nursing home, noting that she hasn’t decided on a specific location yet, but is happy with her current beach residence and finds it a peaceful retreat.

Whelan clinched his triumph in the Game of Pens: Challenge via a decisive game of rock, paper, scissors against his fellow competitor, Phil Kane.

Beyond his individual pursuits, Whelan revealed his philanthropic intentions in an interview with Entertainment Tonight. Expressing her desire to make a positive impact with her prize, she spoke of her commitment to supporting various charitable causes.
