Disney World crowds suffer again amid Florida danger

It was an unusually quiet summer at Walt Disney World Resort. On traditionally busy weekends like July 4th and Labor Day, wait times were low and Disney parks were empty. Nothing brought the Walt Disney World Resort back to crowded “normal.” Some fans blamed it on the summer heat. Some decried the demise of “revenge tourism” after the pandemic.

But the list of reasons why guests avoid Walt Disney World Resort is growing longer by the day. Disney parks are at even more risk as BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ advocacy groups continue to warn travelers to stay away from Florida.

Last week, there were viral reports that the Walt Disney World Resort was placed on lockdown due to an increase in the number of coronavirus cases. Rumors of a lockdown are inaccurate, but new coronavirus infections are spreading across Central Florida, especially after Gov. Ron DeSantis’ Central Florida Tourism Oversight District Board banned pandemic-related mandates at Disney theme parks. Doctors warn that the number of infected people is on the rise.

A few days ago, air quality experts also warned guests that visiting Walt Disney World Resort could be dangerous. Smoke from the Canadian wildfires traveled thousands of miles to Florida, sending the state’s air quality index (AQI) into the red.

AirNow.gov warned Floridians and visitors to avoid strenuous outdoor activities and not spend too much time outdoors. If you can’t reschedule or move your activity, she advised choosing less taxing movements (such as walking instead of running).

Two videos have been removed for unknown reasons, while a third video shows a screen recording of a guest’s My Disney Experience app while visiting Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
