New Hollywood movie puts Wroclaw in the spotlight – The First News
Wrocław’s Centennial Hall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has become the new star of the latest installment of the hit film series The Hunger Games.
“The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes,” based on Suzanne Collins’ prequel to the actual Hunger Games trilogy, tells the story of villain Coriolanus Snow in his youth and his path to becoming the tyrannical leader of the fictional post-war nation of Panem.
Starring major Hollywood actors such as Golden Globe winner Rachel Ziegler, Academy Award winner Viola Davis, Game of Thrones’ Peter Dinklage, Euphoria’s Hunter Schaeffer, and British actor Tom Blythe, the prequel is partially filmed in Poland and Germany in summer 2022.
The interiors of Wrocław’s Centennial Hall serve as the main arena for the Tenth “Bloody” Games where protagonist Lucy Gray Bird, played by Zegler, fights to the death.
The famous hall played a pivotal role in the film, as it was completely transformed from a cultural space into a war zone with the help of German set designer Uli Hanisch and visual effects.
Speaking about the production, Hanisch explained: “We had to close down the entire floor space and make it raw, brutal and repellent.
“This is a kind of model arena, on the model on which all subsequent arenas were built.”
The decision to film in Poland is credited to director Francis Lawrence, who is known for finding unusual locations for filming.
“The production of The Hunger Games is without a doubt one of the most demanding and impressive projects in the very rich history of Centennial Hall,” said Jacob Grodniewski, president of Centennial Hall.
“We are proud that this professional team chose our facility. We owe it, of course, to the extraordinary modernist dome, but also to the entire modern facilities in both the hall and the entire complex.
“It was an arduous task, and we were able to meet the high expectations of the producers, and thanks to this, in a few days, viewers all over the world will be able to see the interior of the largest showcase in Wrocław.”
Built to commemorate the centenary of Frederick William III’s victory over Napoleon at the Battle of Leipzig, the ceremonial opening of the Centenary Hall on 20 May 1913 was one of the biggest events in Wrocław’s history.
It was also revealed that Wrocław beat out several other European cities to serve as a production base for the film which is now No. 1 at the global box office.
In addition to Wroclaw, other scenes were also filmed in other locations in Lower Silesia including Chełmiec and Grzędy.
