Fraud 2003, directed by Tusshar Hiranandan, is based on the 2003 stamp paper forgery scandal worth 30,000 crores. The makers inspired the book Telgi Scam: Reporter’s Ki Diary. Gagan Dev Riyar played Abdul Karim Telgi, the man who committed this scam. The makers have released the new season on Sony LIV and let’s see how it goes.

story:

Abdul Karim Telgi (Gagan Dev Riyar) is in the limelight after he spends a lot of money on a bar dancer. This incident makes everyone realize how rich Telgi is. Politicians and policemen who help Telgi start demanding more and more money to protect him. Telgi agrees to this, but little does he know that they are trying to make him a scapegoat. A famous Karnataka star is kidnapped and the kidnappers demand a lump sum from the government. At the request of the government, Abdul arranges the money. But a few honest officers are neck-deep in Telgi’s pain.

Plus points:

Stamp Paper Scam is not as famous as Harshad Mehta Scam but the subject really has a huge potential and the creators have explored it. While the first volume shows how Abdul Telgi built his empire, the second volume depicts his downfall. How politicians and a few police officers tried to make Telgi a scapegoat is well portrayed.

Volume 2 highlights more of Telgi’s personal side and family angle. The emotions weren’t that big in the first season, but here the emotions worked pretty well. The scenes featuring Gagan Dev Riyar and Sana Aman Sheikh were particularly good. Sana Aman Sheikh’s character says a beautiful dialogue that criminals unknowingly influence their families, which is very true.

The first three episodes were quite interesting. As far as the actors are concerned, Gagan Dev Riyar has once again hit it out of the park with his impactful and refined performance. Gagan is too good in emotional scenes and he is definitely the backbone of Scam 2003. After Gagan, it is Mukesh Tiwari who grabs eyeballs with his solid performance. He is played by Sana Aman Sheikh.

Minus points:

There is no doubt that the team put a lot of effort into the research. But there is uncertainty as far as several developments are concerned. Several events are difficult to follow and thus the show becomes confusing at times.

After a good start, the pace slows down in the last two episodes. They also drag a bit. Famous Bhojpuri actor Dinesh Lal Yadav is part of this second season. Although he acts well, his character is not well carved out. The ending lacks punch.

Technical aspects:

Ishaan Chhabra’s music is decent. Cinematographer Stanley did a good job. The prison sets were well designed. The editing of the last few episodes could have been better. Production values are good.

Director Tusshar Hiranandan has done a decent job with Volume 2. While the first three episodes were engaging, the ending lacked the desired impact. However, the makers deserve credit for making a show about a topic that is hardly known to the public.

Verdict:

Overall, Scam 2003 Volume 2 starts off on a good note, but it has an ordinary ending. A good script is well complemented by a solid performance by Gagan Dev Riyar. However, there are a few parts that are a little confusing and could have been handled better. While the show isn’t great, it’s still worth watching for its strong themes and interesting moments.
