Man shot to death at east Charlotte home, CMPD says – WSOC TV

CHARLOTTE — A man was shot and killed Wednesday in an east Charlotte neighborhood, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

Maj. Ryan Jackson told Channel 9’s Anthony Kustula that police responded to a home on Wenda Place near Idlewild Road just before 5 a.m. for a report of an assault with a deadly weapon.

They found a man who had been shot at the scene. According to CMPD, the victim, Simon Yemane Semele, 34, died outside the home.

Neighbors told Kustula they heard a single gunshot followed by a man screaming for help.

“You don’t usually see things like this,” said Ruby Harris, who lives in the neighborhood. “When something happens, it makes me nervous.” “I just want to feel safe, that’s all. Feel safe and secure.”

Other neighbors said it was the first time they felt unsafe since living in the area.

“You might have to look around a little more carefully when you go out,” neighbor Dylan Jacobs told Channel 9.

No suspects have been arrested at this time.

Other neighbors said they saw the car returning from the neighborhood, but it was too dark to identify the make and model.

Semele’s death was Charlotte’s second homicide in less than seven hours, making it a busy night for crime scene detectives. The other incident occurred at a gas station in University City, where police said someone shot 22-year-old Kai Hall.

Major Jackson responded to both shots. Kustula asked early Wednesday morning about the safety of the city.

“As far as we know, these are not random acts,” Jackson said.

So far, CMPD has not released a motive in either incident. But detectives are hopeful that arrests will be made soon, as they say the violent act may be targeted.
