Netflix has released the new film ‘Amar Singh Chamkira’ starring Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra. Let’s see how it goes.
Story:
The film is a biopic of Amar Singh Chamkira (Diljit Dosanjh), a famous Punjabi singer and musician who came to limelight for his vulgar and double-meaning songs. How did Amar Singh Chamkira influence the majority of Punjabis through his songs? What challenges did he face to compose and sing such songs? What the hell happened in life? Watch the movie for the answer.
Plus points:
Not only those who are familiar with Amar Singh Chamkira but also those who know nothing about this Punjabi singer will surely enjoy this film as it is narrated in an entertaining and informative manner. The back-and-forth script is engaging for the most part and filled with songs throughout.
Even if you don’t know about the singer, you’ll enjoy the film even more, as the story both shocks and entertains. Singers receive a lot of love and hate from the public due to their song choices. According to him, he’s doing it right because there are people who enjoy his work. However, a few people oppose him, saying he is ruining society and objectifying women. This film raises questions about what is considered art and who decides what is considered art.
The film does not romanticize Amar Singh Chamkira. It presents the story from multiple perspectives without any embellishment. Imtiaz Ali leaves it up to us to decide whether Amar Singh Chamkari is a legend or not, and that is the best part of the film. It often depicts the anti-Sikh riots of 1984 and how Amar Singh’s songs brought respite to Punjabis. The film does a good job of depicting the various hardships faced by Amar Singh.
Diljit Dosanjh plays this role brilliantly and uplifts the mood with his mesmerizing performance. Diljit is a singer by profession, so his performance seemed very natural. He portrayed a wide range of emotions with great expression. Parineeti Chopra plays Diljit’s wife well. This role is very challenging for Parineeti considering that she is co-starring with a famous singer (the song is recorded live through Diljit and Parineeti’s voice). The actress tried her best to match Diljit.
Minus points:
Songs are an integral part of the story and drive the film forward. You should follow these songs more carefully. Failure to do so may also result in a dropped connection.
Since the entire movie is based on songs, some scenes may seem repetitive and boring. The team could have removed some songs to make the film look even better, and that would have given the film even more reach. Sometimes the pace slows down in the middle.
Technical aspects:
The legendary AR Rahman has done a great job and is the second pillar of Amar Singh Chamkira after Diljit. His work in Maidan is now winning hearts and minds and in a short gap he has created magic once again. The small town setting is well captured through the lens of Sylvester Fonseca. Production values are too good. The dialogue is great and conveys the director’s vision effectively.
Imtiaz Ali did a solid job portraying the musical journey of Amar Singh Chamkira. He also included the events surrounding the singer, but Imtiaz did not take sides. The choice to show real-life footage along with the film is a great idea and will help you connect with Amar Singh Chamkira better.
verdict:
Generally, biopics present the protagonist in a positive way, but Imtiaz Ali makes this film stand out by offering multiple perspectives and asking a lot of questions. Diljit Dosanjh is remarkable and ably supported by Parineeti Chopra. The film also benefits from rich music and neat direction. You have to follow the lyrics carefully to enjoy the movie. Repetitive moments could have been avoided, and the pacing slumps at times. Despite its problems, Amar Singh Chamkira is an attractive watch. If you liked the British movie Elvis, there’s a good chance you’ll like Amar Singh Chamkira as well. This is because the characterization of the main characters in both is somewhat similar.
