Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming believes that captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has a similar batting style to MS Dhoni and it is unfair to label Gaikwad as ‘slow’.

Ruturaj Gaikwad, who took over the captaincy from Dhoni at the beginning of the IPL season, had a mixed record, losing two matches on the road but winning three at home. However, the 27-year-old has faced criticism for his “slow” pace when batting.

The right-handed opener has scored 155 runs in five matches at a strike rate of 117.42.

“There’s no difference. He’s super cool. I know the last captain was cool. But this player is cut from the same cloth, and that permeates through.” Stephen Fleming When asked if he had discussed the difference between leadership and batting with Gaikwad, he replied:

“He’s a very impressive young man in terms of his game and what he needs to do. I think he’s been unfairly put in the bracket of being said to be slow. But when it comes to some of these stats… You have to understand the context,” Fleming told the media during CSK’s training session at the Wankhede Stadium.

“We know this movie is like a Bollywood movie and sometimes they put these things on screen. But he’s fine. He’s playing in good condition. Last time. The match (CSK vs KKR) was a great example of how a leader plays and there is class there. I have no doubts about Ruturaj,” Fleming added.

In the current season of IPL, CSK has suffered two losses in away games, showing their struggles at home so far. They have secured three wins from five matches overall, but their next challenge is away matches at Mumbai and Lucknow before a return to Chepauk in 15 days. The question remains: Can they maintain their winning form on the road against a formidable opponent?
