Accepted by writer Alex Convery on behalf of airPointing out, “The film is about knowing your worth and fighting for it, and this is something we experienced firsthand as artists while walking the picket lines for more than 200 days this summer. It was long and hard, but we succeeded in it and showed the world that we know what we deserve.”
Adam Driver ft Ferrari Director Michael Mann, with his credit, tells the story of when Mann left his wallet at a 7-Eleven and instead of waiting at a red light to get back into the store, he got out of his car and ran through a major intersection in Los Angeles. “It was actually a moment where I felt like I really saw Michael; If he does that with wasted time in his wallet, how does that translate to being on a movie set? Driver said, explaining how the director “doesn’t want anything to get in the way of what he’s trying to do, including himself.” Mann belatedly dedicated the award Ferrari Screenwriter Troy Kennedy Martin said, “It’s really the heart and soul of innovation.”
Rustin Star Colman Domingo and White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre gave a social justice salute, a tribute to the Netflix film about Washington march organizer Bayard Rustin. Director George C. said: While receiving the award, Wolf said: “Democracy is a muscle, and if you do not use it, it atrophy and does not perform its function. We realize that every day we must invest in democracy, otherwise mediocrity and evil will rise.”
He added: “What Bayard also believes in, and what this hall is also about, is the effectiveness and power of teamwork. … We all dream of creating work that will change the world, and the next best thing is to make a film about someone who has already done that. …You’re honoring an amazing person (in Rustin) who just happens to be on Netflix right now, so go watch the damn movie.
Brian Williams introduced to Artist, band leaderPraising the film, which he says he “watched 24 hours ago and thought only a little.”
“It’s safe to say that (actor, director and co-writer) Bradley Cooper has created his own American masterpiece,” Williams added.
Speaking after Bernstein’s adult children, Alex and Jamie, Cooper said in part, “The journey we went on to tell this story as truthfully and authentically as possible would not have happened without Jamie, Alex and Nina (Bernstein’s children, Leonard Bernstein).”
He found it appropriate that the film be celebrated at the Gotham Awards, where he said of the Bernsteins: “New York was their city.”
Killers star Robert De Niro paid tribute to the Martin Scorsese-directed film. However, there was an awkward moment when De Niro began reading his prepared notes and then noticed that his comments had been edited. After a video package of Scorsese and Osage President Jeffrey Standing Bear, De Niro insisted that he read his unedited notes, which included a number of specific political comments, including remarks about former President Donald Trump.
“The truth is not the truth, and the facts are replaced by conspiracy theories,” De Niro said in part. “Lying has become a tool in the charlatan’s arsenal. The former president lied to us more than 30,000 times during his four years, and he continues to do so in his campaign of revenge.”
“With all his lies, he can’t hide his soul,” he added of Trump, saying the former president was showing a lack of respect for him through his derogatory use of the term “Pocahontas.”
Gotham Prize nominees are selected by panels of film and television critics, journalists, festival programmers, and film curators.
Separate juries made up of writers, directors, actors, producers, editors and others directly involved in the making of the films will determine the final award winners.
Recent Gotham winners have included Oscar winners Everything, Everywhere, At Once, Coda, Nomadland, Marriage Story, American Factory, Moonlight, Spotlight And Birdman.
