Joker 2 trailer unites Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix in song
The first trailer for Joker: Folie à Deux It brings together Academy Award winners Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga in one of the most intriguing entries on the 2024 theatrical calendar.
Warner Bros. revealed unveiled its appearance at CinemaCon, where Joker 2 is among the hottest titles that theater owners have been interested in checking out — and for good reason. It’s a sequel to the billion-dollar blockbuster that earned Phoenix an Oscar, but it also takes a left turn with its entry into the genre.
But director Todd Phillips noted that the film is not much different from the first film in some ways, in which music was also a key element.
“We never talked about it that way,” Phillips said when asked if it was a musical. “I would say it’s a movie where music is a key element. To me that doesn’t deviate too much from the first movie. In the first movie, ‘Arthur has music in him.’ And he has a credit for it.”
Before introducing the trailer, Phillips revealed that he wanted to come to CinemaCon in 2020 just to thank movie theater owners, despite not having a movie to promote.
“I wanted to thank you guys…about a month before the first Joker movie came out, the story of the movie actually flipped,” he said, noting that there was speculation that the movie might inspire violence. He thanked the theater owners for staying strong and sticking to the film.
Phoenix returns to the role of Arthur Fleck, while Lady Gaga appears in a role said to be inspired by comic book character Harley Quinn.
