A VFX company has filed a lawsuit against Marvel for allegedly stealing its technology to produce the Avengers films Hollywood

The Walt Disney Company faces the risk of losing a significant portion of its profits from the last two Avengers films in a lawsuit filed by Rearden, a VFX company that alleges Marvel used its patented technology to animate key characters in blockbuster films. However, The Hollywood Reporter claims that a federal judge has dismissed part of the case against Marvel. Rearden claimed that DD3, a company with which Disney has collaborated on a significant amount of visual effects on hit films such as Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), Beauty and the Beast (2017), and the last two Avengers films – Avengers: Infinity War (2018) ) and Avengers: Endgame (2019) – didn’t have the technology that those films did.

The technology, called MOVA Contour Reality Capture, has allegedly been used to animate popular Marvel characters like The Incredible Hulk (played by Mark Ruffalo in the Avengers films). However, due to the lack of evidence in this regard, part of the case against Marvel was dismissed on Friday.

What’s left of the case?

However, the court gave Reddin one last chance to amend her claim and include the evidence required to prove how Marvel benefited from the stolen technology, if at all. “The court will therefore give Reddin a final opportunity to amend his copyright infringement claim, as Reddin must be willing to make his amendments without warning and/or with additional detail explaining the basis of his beliefs,” the judge said.

If Redden can do this successfully, it could cost Disney huge damages. If found guilty, the company could be forced to give up a significant portion of its profits from Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, which combined have grossed more than $6 billion at the global box office. It could also cost Marvel a dent in goodwill, given that the studio is already facing tough times due to its recent string of releases not doing well at the box office.
