Why Kevin Sorbo stands for faith in Hollywood: ‘Changing people’s lives’
By Movieguide® Contributor
Actors Kevin Sorbo and Ricky Schroder recently discussed how they combat the destructive ideologies typically promoted by Hollywood with pro-American, faith-filled content.
“Everyone is programmed by what they listen to, what they watch, what they hear, and so we need to kind of change the course of programming,” Schroeder told podcast host Andrew Klavan.
The actor recently started the non-profit Reel American Heroes. It honors our nation by presenting courageous films, documentaries, television series, and public service announcements; Stories about veterans, active-duty soldiers, first responders, and Gold Star families, as well as past and present heroic figures. Our goal is to inspire, raise awareness, entertain and educate.
“I started this nonprofit because of the academy’s diversity, equity and inclusion guidelines,” Schroeder explained. “A few years ago, they changed the guidelines so you couldn’t be eligible for the best picture category for an Oscar if you didn’t have LGBTQ+ characters (and) the themes of your story.”
He added: “It really bothered me, and I decided that Hollywood had fallen at that point, and I needed to… I still wanted to tell stories and I still worked and did things.”
Sorbo pointed out the real consequences that come from standing up for his values in the entertainment industry.
“Being a Christian and a conservative is like being a double leper in Hollywood, but you know I’m doing what I can to get the disease out there,” he said. “I had a couple of films in theaters last year, but you know they didn’t run very long because they didn’t have a huge following… We don’t have a big advertising budget… but they’re great films and great stories.”
Despite the setbacks, Sorbo shared how rewarding it is to do what he loves in a way that honors God.
“I don’t make the big money I made that day, but I don’t care. I do things that change people’s lives… I hear people every day saying, ‘I became a Christian because of your movies.’
Sorbo created Sorbo Studios “to infuse traditional values and uplifting content into the fabric of American culture.”
“I founded Sorbo Studios because I thought: I love this industry. I love the creative process. I love the people working on both sides of the camera“,” he said. “I’ve shot more than 60 films since I left Hollywood. Not all of them are good. About ten of them are completely bad. But I was too busy doing that.”
The studio’s most recent release was MIRACLE IN EAST TEXAS.
Movieguide® reported:
Kevin Sorbo’s latest film, MIRACLE IN EAST TEXAS, is a “message to the big studios” about what viewers want.
“This is one of those rare films that combines comedy, drama, a little romance and real-life events, and we are thrilled with the film festival awards we have already received,” Sorbo said of the film. “As independent filmmakers, we understand and continue to create trusted entertainment for the whole family. This is a message to the big studios about what families really want.”
The actor told The Stream that he was attracted to the humor of the script as well as the fact that it is based on a true story.
“I was laughing at the characters,” Sorbo said. “The real story behind it all was amazing to me!”
