Ryan Gosling reacts to Margot Robbie who snubbed the Oscars – The Hollywood Reporter
Ryan Gosling issued a statement about BarbieGreta Gerwig and Margot Robbie were snubbed in two major Oscar categories on Tuesday.
The actor had some strong words after Gerwig missed out on an Academy Award nomination for Best Director, and Robbie was not nominated for Best Actress. Gosling was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Role (along with his co-star America Ferrera), leading many to harshly criticize the nominations as ignoring the blockbuster’s two biggest creators.
“I am extremely honored to be nominated by my peers alongside such outstanding artists in a year filled with so many amazing films,” the actor began. “And I never thought I’d say this, but I also feel honored and proud to be portraying a plastic doll named Ken.”
The actor continued: “But there is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making and globally celebrated film.” No one in the film would be recognized without their talent, persistence and genius. To say I’m disappointed they weren’t nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement.
He continued: “Despite all the odds, with two soulless, naked puppets, fortunately, they made us laugh, broke our hearts, advanced culture and made history. Their work should be recognized alongside other very deserving nominees.
“Having said that, I am so happy for America Ferrera and the other amazing artists who contributed their talents to the making of this groundbreaking film,” Gosling concluded.
Since Oscar snubs are a fairly routine annual event, Gosling’s statement is unusual — and reflects the unique level of criticism the Academy’s nomination decisions received earlier in the day.
BarbieOf course, not only was it the most successful film of the year and helped bring moviegoers back to the cinema with the success of “Barbenheimer,” but it was also nominated for Best Picture and, by all accounts, was an extremely difficult project to pull off. .
Here are some of the previous online reactions to the rejection:
“Both Gerwig and Robbie were ignored… It’s still too easy for Hollywood to dismiss and dismiss the artistic contributions of women — even when it’s the most important movie of the year!” books MSNBC host Jennifer Palmieri. “Oh my God. It was nominated for Best Picture. He didn’t direct himself, friends!”
“The joke I told my wife on the way out of Barbie: ‘Watch Gosling get nominated and Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie get eliminated’…it just happened.” books Sports host Joey Wright. “The Academy needs a real man in the looking-glass moment because the whole idea and premise of Barbie completely flew over their heads.”
“Was Greta Gerwig snubbed for Best Director?” books TV host Julie Stewart Binks. “How is this even possible? Margot Robbie isn’t in the running, but Ryan Gosling is? Did anyone even understand the plot of the highest-grossing movie of all time?”
“After Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie made a movie about the patriarchy that made a billion dollars for Hollywood, the guy in the movie was nominated for a major award, and I’m honestly not sure what I was expecting.” wrote a columnist Brandon Friedman.
Gerwig was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay with co-writer Noah Baumbach, although this also received criticism. Many felt Barbie The screenplay should be classified as an original screenplay, keeping in mind – as Gosling points out above – Barbie They are only “adapted” to the extent that there are puppets.
Still, Barbie It was not overlooked overall, as the film received eight nominations. In addition to Best Picture, Adapted Screenplay, and nominations for Ferrera and Gosling, the film was also nominated for Costume and Production Design and received two nominations in the Original Song category.
