Sandbox Films’ New York office nods to the Golden Age of Hollywood
Sandbox Films unveils its newly designed office on Broadway, which sets the scene for its film business. New York-based design firm Civilian oversees the vintage décor and eclectic mix of custom-designed furniture, creating a creative vibe.
Set in Manhattan’s Flatiron District, the cinematic journey begins in a 1920s neo-Gothic skyscraper, emulating the backdrop of classic film noir.
The new Sandbox Films office by Civilian
The award-winning documentary production company wanted to weave storytelling through their newly designed 4,200 square foot office space, inspired by the Art Deco movements of Amsterdam and Stockholm.
The sophisticated interiors and lavish color palette nod to the Golden Age of Hollywood. Civilian’s design was inspired by Danish modernist designer Poul Henningsen, using bold industrial lines, seductive curves and touches of colour.
As you enter the office space, you are greeted by a circular stone-topped bar, which serves as a welcoming kitchen and pantry during the day, and converts into an entertainment space for evening events and nightly shows.
Marquee lighting extends across the surrounding beams, casting a canopy of light throughout the building, illuminating the focal point of the seating area: a custom double-sided bouclé inspired by Pierre Chareau and a velvet sofa, accompanied by refinished Milo Baughman swivel chairs.
Throughout the room, sliding doors invite you into the conference room, office and editorial suites. A custom-designed conference table is paired with antique Tobia Scarpa ‘Sling’ chairs, while additional spaces provide seating workstations.
The Art Deco-inspired Dolby Atmos screening room, the only one of its kind in New York City, is a visually relaxing zone; Civilian worked with audio engineers to create an immersive audio-visual environment. Wool and walnut panels mask acoustic reverberation, while also complementing the Cineak violet reclining chairs, customized with built-in table lights made in collaboration with Lambert et Fils.
The interiors are an inspiring space that offers a constant stream of inspiration from historical architecture to iconic film references, and is the perfect creative space for the Sandbox’s cinematic science fiction.
