A Movie About Bill Hader’s SNL Character, Stefon Was Never Made – The Hollywood Reporter

Seth Meyers has revealed a potential movie based on Bill Hader’s fan favorite Saturday Night Live The character of Stefon was never created.
During his last appearance on Las Culturistas podcast, he told hosts Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers that “there was a moment in time when the idea for a ‘Stefon’ script was discussed.”
He added, “This wasn’t a scripted scene, but I had a pitch for myself and Stefon, because I knew it was going to be Stefon and James Franco, or whoever, whatever. It wasn’t going to be me and Stefon.”
Known as one of Hader’s most memorable characters, Stephon first appeared on the sketch comedy show in 2008. He later became the New York City freak show correspondent on “Weekend Update” in 2010, which Myers hosted at the time .
The comedian went on to detail his vision for the film: “I said, here’s how I think it should start: It should start with Stephon on Weekend Update, and when it’s over, I’m disappointed again because he’s the city reporter who didn’t bring any St. Patrick’s Day tips with him,” he said. “Look, to make it up to you, just go out and have a night, you and me together, in Stefon, New York.” And I’m like, “Okay, one night.” And then you’re going to make these very quick cuts between me and him in all these crazy clubs. It’ll be This is the opening montage, and then it will end with me in a body bag, and Stefon will say, ‘He’s dead.’ And then a splash: ‘Stefon: The Movie.’”
After hearing the idea, Rogers said in response: “15 years ago, they would have made this movie.”
Myers, who presented “Weekend Update” on SNL From 2006 to 2014, Yang also told Rogers that his perception and appreciation of his character, the straight man opposite Hader, changed over the years on the show.
“I thought my job was just to be a character for Stefon. Then very slowly, he (Hader) and (John) Mulaney wrote this… It was my romantic comedy,” he explained.
Their dynamic ended when Hader left SNL In 2013. But Myers still remembers Barry The actor’s memorable final proposal involved Stefon leaving to marry Anderson Cooper, but Myers eventually interrupted the wedding and brought Stefon back into the studio for a sweet cuddle during their last minute together.
“It was Bill’s last show…and I also know I’ll be leaving next year to host late time at night. “Bill and I held hands and started crying,” Myers recalls. “It was so funny because I was getting married in a few months, and I was saying to myself: ‘If I don’t cry at my wedding…’”
Myers left SNL The following year to host Late Night with Seth Meyers.
