Anuj Doohan on Pippa debut: My character demanded to go beyond the surface
Anuj’s cinematic journey began during the lockdown of November 2020 when he saw a casting call posted Tess Josephon Instagram. This accidental discovery turned out to be a turning point in his life. The audition, which required a monologue, was directedAnuj Through a series of emotional rounds. After the third round, which was held on Zoom, Anuj got the news that he had been shortlisted, marking a dream come true. A meeting with director Raja Menon further cemented her role in the film.
Discussing his collaboration with Raja Menon, Anuj shared, “Working with Raja Menon Sir, it was a truly transformative experience for me. Raja Sir made me feel like a part of the family, which helped ease my nervousness and ensure my comfort in this new environment. As my first feature film, his mentorship and hands-on approach to workshops was instrumental in bringing his entire cast together as a great unit.
Pippa, a film centered around brotherhood and friendship, was a journey of character development and storytelling under the direction of Raja Menon. Set against the backdrop of the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 on the Eastern Front, the brave story of Brigadier Balram Singh Mehta, portrayed by Ishaan Khattar. Anuj praised the director’s humility, down-to-earth nature and exceptional understanding of the art of filmmaking as truly inspiring.
Discussing the preparation for her role, Anuj shared, “On my journey to prepare for my role in Pippa, we did a lot of reading workshops to understand our characters and the script. Portraying my character as a Sikh required me to go beyond the surface and truly embrace the subtleties of the culture.” and nuances.”
