Prime Video has released the film ‘Pippa’ starring Ishaan Khatter, Mrunal Thakur and Priyanshu Panuri in lead roles. The film is inspired by the book ‘The Burning Chaffees’ written by Brigadier General Balram S. Mehta.
Story:
‘Pippa’ is a biopic based on the life of Captain Balram Singh Mehta. In 1947, India was divided into her three parts. Pakistan was divided into East Pakistan (Bangladesh) and West Pakistan. Even though East Pakistan had a larger population, it was still ruled by West Pakistan. Pakistan held its first general elections in 1970, but then-president General Yahya Khan rejected them. This caused the people of East Pakistan to lose patience and revolt in search of an independent country. The Pakistani military begins killing demonstrators, and the majority of East Pakistanis flee to India. The film focuses on how the Indian Army helped liberate East Pakistan.
Plus points:
This film gives an insight into how India helped East Pakistan (Bangladesh) achieve liberation from West Pakistan. It clearly depicts why the people of East Pakistan started the revolution, what problems they faced during the rebellion, and how refugees suffered at the hands of the Pakistani army. This film highlights the greatness of the Indian government, which chooses humanity above all else.
The war scenes in Pippa are handled perfectly. They are brilliantly conceived and will keep your audience excited. Especially the midfield part is wonderful. Solid visuals and neat VFX work of his go hand in hand.
Ishaan Khatter is perfect for the role of Captain Balram Singh Mehta. In his role he has two shades, one as an irresponsible person and the other as a determined commander. Ishaan aces them perfectly. Mrunal Thakur played the role well and gave a decent performance. Despite her limited screen time, she has left her mark. Priyanshu Panuri is great and the family drama is decent too.
Minus points:
The pacing of the last 40 minutes is a little slower, and the creators could have removed some repetitive scenes for more impact. The ending of the movie could have been better.
Soni Razdan gives a good performance, but her character is underutilized. Considering the serious tone of the film, her first hour of songs wasn’t absolutely necessary. The producers missed an opportunity by not releasing the film in theaters, as the war scenes in Pippa are worth experiencing in theaters.
Technical aspects:
Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman proved why he is the best in the industry with Pippa. His background score was interesting. The visuals are amazing and cinematographer Priya Seth has done a great job. The camera angles for the war scenes were very good and provided a solid viewing experience. The editing could have been a little better. Production values are excellent.
Talking about director Raja Krishna Menon, he has done a decent job in this film. The way things are set up is very good and the long war sequences are done perfectly. However, the story loses momentum in the final minutes, but that could have been handled.
verdict:
All in all, Pippa is an honest attempt to shed light on the 1971 India-Pakistan War, or more precisely, the Battle of Garibpur. The story clearly depicts how the three brothers fought bravely for their country. The war scenes are well designed. On the contrary, the pace slows down in the last few minutes, and the climax lacks the impact one would hope for. Also, the producers could have made the movie a little shorter. Nevertheless, Pippa is a satisfying war drama.
