Actor Vicky Kaushal on Tuesday said he initially didn’t think he was good enough to play the role of Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw in director Meghna Gulzar’s film. Sam Bahadur.

Speaking at the film’s trailer launch event held at Manekshaw Center here, Kaushal said that during the shooting of the film in 2018, Gulzar expressed his desire to make a biopic on Manekshaw. large.

“I remember when Meghna and I were working on ‘Raazi’. Later, during the shooting schedule in Patiala, she told me what she wanted to do next. And she told Sam -I said I want to make a film about Manekshaw,” Kaushal said.

“My mother and father are both from Punjab, and I had heard a lot about my father through them. But I didn’t know how he was. So during that conversation, I secretly asked him what he was like. I searched on Google and saw his picture. I said, “He’s so handsome that he won’t get this role.” But I have to thank Meghna for giving me the role of this handsome person,” he added.

The trailer was launched in the presence of Army Chief General Manoj Pande. Kaushal’s co-stars Sanya Malhotra, Fatima Sana Shaikh, director Gulzar and producer Ronnie Screwvala were also present at the event.

Sam Bahadur Manekshaw’s career spans more than 40 years, including key milestones from combat in World War II to chief of army staff during the 1971 India-Pakistan war that led to the creation of Bangladesh, the producers said. . For Kaushal, he said it was not easy to play this role.

“This was the most difficult role of my life, not because of the way he spoke or walked, but because of the person he was. This was an attempt to live that life. It was obviously It’s a team effort,” he added. The actor said the character’s attempt was to bring out his caring nature on the big screen.

“In one interview, he was asked about his greatest accomplishment in his 40-year career. And he said, “In my career from second lieutenant to field marshal, I have never punished a soldier.” said. And that his compassion, especially when he has all the power and strength, and his feelings for all the jawans, made him a hero to me.

“The swag, the style, the charisma was there, but at the end, the heart was there too. He had a caring heart, and that was what I was aiming for.” added.

Kaushal said that as part of his preparation, he had to work on the physical aspects of the character, but the aim was to portray the spirit.

“Sometimes when you’re playing, you don’t realize what you’re doing. Of course, I remember how he walked and talked and how much he bent over and sat. Before we started filming. For three months, Meghna and I spent at least five hours a day reading books, watching his interviews, and discussing Sam.”

“It took me reading a lot of books and meeting his family to really understand his spirit, his way of thinking, the strength of his manhood. Through all of this, we came together and said, “This is what we want.” I thought it was Sam Manekshaw,” he added.
Talking about his reunion with Gulzar, Kaushal said that they had built some trust during ‘Raazi’ but nothing has changed since then.

“Meghna is home for me…I have such a bond with her that it’s like a movie…I trust her intuition and judgment…. She makes films on paper and then goes to the floor Sam Bahadur also stars Sanya Malhotra as Manekshaw’s wife Shiru, and Fatima Sana Shaikh as former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

“I was one of those people who didn’t know about Sam Manekshaw. The people around me, including my parents, never talked about him…But I was educated through movies and learned about his character. There are many people like me,” she added.
