Imtiaz Ali had different plans for ‘Jab We Met’ and ‘Highway’. He had considered casting Sunny Deol in Highway, but Bobby Deol was his first choice for the role of Jab We Met.
‘Highway’ and ‘Jab We Met’ remain Imtiaz Ali’s most memorable films. However, in a recent conversation, the filmmaker shared that he has different plans for both the films. He was considering casting Sunny Deol in Highway, but Bobby Deol was his first choice. Jab We Met.
However, fate works in mysterious ways and it worked out for the best in Imtiaz’s case as both the films were well received by critics and were also hits at the box office. Speaking to Lalantop, Imtiaz said: Bobby and I were very good friends when we were making this movie. His family… are very nice people. However, ‘Socha Na Tha’ took five years from production to release. Meanwhile, I was about to start a new movie and Bobby was going to do Jab We Met. Socha Na Ta bounced back after that, but I still didn’t make a movie for two years because I wanted Bobby to start making movies (Jab We Met). ”

The filmmaker revealed that Bobby kept delaying ‘Jab We Met’ because he was receiving offers from big name directors. “But he had other offers from big directors, so I was waiting for that to happen. The moment came when I couldn’t believe it, because I was in Socha Na Ta for five years and then I didn’t make any films for two years, so I was under financial strain. I said, “Let’s not watch this movie.” Let’s shake hands and decide not to make this movie together, because then it will affect us,” he added.

In a chat with HuffPost in 2017, Bobby said he was set to star in the film until one day he found out that director Kareena had replaced him with Shahid Kapoor. Kareena and Shahid were dating at the time.
Imtiaz also revealed that he was planning to make Highway with Sunny Deol and then take it to Subhash Ghai as well. He said, “I was going to make Highway with Sunny Duru. It was a very different movie. It was a revenge story like Sunny Duru usually does. That movie would have worked too. Highway with Subhash Ghai. He said the film’s script was similar to his 1983 film Hero. I’ve seen Hero 25 times, so the story is inside me. ” Highway was later made with Alia Bhatt and Randeep Hooda.
Currently, Imtiaz is awaiting the release of the film ‘Chamkira’, which delves into the life and achievements of Amar Singh Chamkira, the famous singer who charmed Punjab with his music. The film stars Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra in the lead roles.
