‘Priscilla’ red carpet canceled, Hollywood screening venue changed

Monday’s red carpet premiere of Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla in Los Angeles has been canceled due to the current global situation, distribution company A24 has confirmed. The screening venue was changed due to a dispute between IATSE and the Hollywood Legion Theater, which is part of the American Legion veterans organization.

A representative for the film released a statement regarding the red carpet: “Out of respect for the events happening in the world, we will not be attending the red carpet for the Los Angeles premiere of Priscilla.”

This is not the first time the Priscilla carpet has been canceled amid escalating violence in Israel and Palestine. The Academy Museum also decided to forego the red carpet at its annual fundraising gala, which was scheduled for Saturday, “in honor of the devastating conflicts and loss of life occurring overseas.” We have chosen to postpone the event entirely.

Regarding the relocation of the “Priscilla” premiere, the projectionists union IATSE Local 11 began picketing the site on September 14th. IATSE Business President Ronald R. Valentine told The Hollywood Reporter, which first reported on the dispute: The company committed multiple unfair labor practices, the most serious of which was violating a new collective bargaining agreement reached in April 2023 and misrepresenting the terms of that agreement to union members. ” Valentine continued, “As a result, IATSE Local 33 had no choice but to call a strike.”

Valentine said Local 33 would like to thank distributor A24 and the “Priscilla” production team for their “cohesiveness” in making the venue change.

Amid the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, “Priscilla” has been granted a tentative agreement allowing its stars, including Cailee Spaeney and Jacob Elordi, who play Priscilla and Elvis Presley, to walk the carpet. Coppola was also scheduled to appear on the carpet.

“Priscilla” premiered at the Venice Film Festival in September and received critical acclaim. A new screening venue has not yet been announced.
