The spookiest movie hits theaters in October on Netflix, Prime Video, and Disney+Hotstar

Halloween Horror Specials: From the top must-sees to notable spin-offs, including some really bad crap, here’s what’s worth watching and what you should avoid.

This year it’s Halloween month, and more specifically, Friday the 13th. That means a series of stories across a variety of platforms are vying for your eyeballs, warm veins, and the back of your seat to take you out of your shock and awe. Without American festivals, many horror films, or even the horror film genre itself, might have had a difficult time sustaining themselves over the years. Good movies sell on their own, but sometimes (as evidenced by the “Barbenheimer” phenomenon earlier this year) a push like a festive event can’t hurt. That said, most Halloween releases are notoriously poor, just money grabs to fill the obligatory void. Anyway, they’re here, which means they’re probably looking for ghosts on their streaming devices or in theaters. Here’s a list of everything you should see, see, and avoid.

Must-see

no one will save you

A home invasion thriller costs just a dime, but Brian Duffield’s recently released film gives it an imaginative kick of sci-fi. Moreover, it is a silent film, meaning there is no dialogue. Anxious Kaitlyn Deaver must fight off an alien invasion all by herself, with no means of dialogue or screams. It evaporates under the pressure of the lid, creating an immersive feeling. Probably one of the best genre movies of the summer. I’m done shouting!

Fall of the House of Usher

Mike Flanagan – Presented by Streamer, this is perhaps the most exciting window into continuous long-form horror. The Haunting of Hill House – ends with a show that pretty much establishes his legend. Flanagan’s latest work celebrates the stories of Edgar Allen Poe with a story of misery and sadness that tears apart the concept of salvation. Over eight episodes, it tells the story of the wicked House of Usher and how all of their young heirs die within weeks. It’s grim, precise, literary, and horrifying in an emotionally disturbing way.

talk to me

This Australian film, directed by the debutant twins (the Philippow brothers) and released in theaters a few months ago, is easily the best of a year of genre disappointment. A group of teenagers discover the ability to summon spirits using their rotting hands. At first you’ll be captivated by the stabbing thrills, but the story turns into a frightening ordeal as you come face to face with a violent history and secrets. It’s not available to stream yet, but it will be soon. Don’t miss out on seeing it for the world to see.

I was able to see

totally killer

Amazon PrimeVideo’s parody of the slasher genre is a fun, sometimes gory, coming-of-age story. Jamie (Kiernan Shipka) is accidentally transported back in time after the “Sweet Sixteen Killer” returns to murder his mother as the final victim of a serial murder spree that began 35 years ago. It ends up. Packed with meta jokes, witty observations about adolescence, wokeism, and a general sense of giddyness about the past. totally killer It’s more fun than scary. This year it will be most fun to watch some kind of horror movie.

I get goosebumps

Perhaps no motley crew of misfits deals with the supernatural quite like Stephen King’s IT (and the films that inspired it), but R.L. Stine’s famous young adult novel , which has been somewhat renamed by Disney into a predictably peppy series. About enough creepiness to keep you going. Thankfully, the kids behind this story are all likable and have a small-town chemistry that doesn’t feel too Disney-like.

ghost of venice

Another recently released in theaters is an investigative thriller, but one that evokes a solid sense of the paranormal. Not everyone is a fan of Kenneth Branagh’s crisp Poirot, but his latest directorial effort may be the most un-Christie mystery we’ve ever seen. It’s jarring, suitably oppressed by the precipices of Venice, and the tricks and stiff camera angles convey an uncomfortable sense of dread. It’s not streaming yet, but it should be soon. Please be careful.

nun 2

Although still in theaters and somewhat shunned by the public, Conjuring Despite the numbers, the franchise is in its final stages. That’s not all nun 2 Boring, uninspiring, and unintentionally funny, it essentially undermines the horror genre by stripping it of the essence of human behavior and emotion. It’s just jump scares and parlor tricks, cosplay after cosplay with patience. Watch it when you want to forget quickly.

Haunted house

You’d think the cast, featuring the likes of Owen Wilson, Dan Levy, Jared Leto, Rosario Dawson, and others, would be at least corny and fun, if not slimy and creepy.disney’s Haunted houseInstead, this tedious infrastructure post-mortem gathers star actors, gives them all the expensive tools they want, and still makes something like a mixture of different kinds of pre-adolescent folk angst. It proves the power of the studio to create. You know who your audience is, but even they will demand better.

Exorcist: Believer

Who would have thought that the first Oscar-nominated horror film would be rebooted by a seemingly reliable director (David Gordon Green) with ecstatic, aggressive results? Even in his iMax, the biggest screen imaginable, and in the loudest arena man has built. Exorcist: Believer It’s a terrible mess. Compared to the original’s ingenuity and visual creepiness (not unlike the year William Friedkin died), it’s an abomination that any true horror fan should not miss.
