CHA Presents Wine & Lecture: “Hollywood Design: How Studio Wardrobe Departments Created the Images of Golden Age Movie Stars” – October 19

The Coronado Historical Society is excited to warmly invite all history buffs and movie buffs to a special lecture on a new book by local Coronado Dan Christian Eskvin on Thursday, October 19th at 5:30 p.m. I am. Hollywood Design: How Studio Wardrobe Departments Created the Images of Golden Age Movie Stars.

From the early days of their establishment in Hollywood, movie studios realized that they needed to establish wardrobe departments and hire the best costume designers they could find. Women made up a large portion of the movie’s audience, and they were inspired by the latest fashions from their favorite stars. Studios directed their ads toward promoting what top stars would wear in upcoming movies.

The talk will focus on Eskvan’s new book and include a slide show featuring the biggest stars of the Golden Age wearing costumes designed to create the image. Christian Eskvin was born in Marseille, France to French parents. He grew up in Los Angeles, attended California State University, Los Angeles, and earned a bachelor’s degree in anthropology and a master’s degree in library science from the University of Southern California. From 1988 until 2018, Ramos served as the beloved director of the Coronado Public Library, where he worked for 30 years and led a major expansion and renovation of the library building, including the addition of Martinez’s “La Avenida” mural. I supervised it. Christian Eskvin received the 2008 Jewel in Our Crown Award from the Coronado Historical Society and the 2016 Coronado Citizen of the Year Award from Coronado Private Bank.

Eskvan is also the author of the following books: Adrian: From Silver Screen to Custom Labels. He also writes a movie costume blog, silverscreenmodes.com. His great-aunt worked in the wardrobe department of a Hollywood studio during the 1920s and his 30s. He is married to Sidney Stanley and lives in Coronado.
