For Vijay Sethupathi’s fans, the much-awaited trailer of his 50th film is finally here! Maharaja‘ has been released and is packed with action, mystery and an unexpected villain played by none other than Anurag Kashyap.
Director: Nithiran Saminathan, Maharaja The film is a departure from Sethupathi’s usual roles. The two-minute trailer introduces us to the protagonist, played by Sethupathi, as Maharaja, who runs a barber shop in KK Nagar. But something is not right. A look of dismay is written on his face as he goes to the police station to report a theft.
Surprisingly, the stolen goods are not your typical missing person, money or jewellery. It is something called ‘Lakshmi’. The trailer playfully invites the audience to guess Lakshmi’s true identity. A pet? A prized possession? Sethupathi’s attempts to describe Lakshmi through gestures only add to the humour and intrigue. The police are sceptical but the Maharaja is adamant. He warns the police to find Lakshmi, leaving the audience with an implicit threat of what will happen if they don’t get her back.
Just when you think the trailer can’t get any more entertaining, it delivers a shocking punch as Anurag Kashyap makes a menacing appearance in the final scene, hinting at him as the film’s antagonist.
Maharaja The film also boasts of a strong supporting cast including Vijay Sethupathi and Anurag Kashyap. Mamta Mohandas, Natty (Natraj), Bharathiraja, Abhirami, Singampuli and Kalki play important roles.
The film is produced by Sudhan Sundaram and Jagadish Palanisamy under their banners Passion Studios and The Root, while B Ajaneesh Loknath has composed the soundtrack.
