Netflix and Yash Raj Films are set to uncover a hidden chapter of Indian history in an upcoming film. Maharajis set to premiere on June 14, 2024, starring Jaideep Ahlawat and debutant Junaid Khan. Set in pre-independence India in 1862, the film sheds light on the courageous struggle of journalist and social reformer Karsandas Mulji.
The year 1862 paints a vivid picture of a nation in flux. With just three universities established and the embers of the Sepoy Mutiny still burning, India was struggling with change. Against this backdrop, a young man named Mulji, studying at Elphinstone College in Mumbai, emerged as a champion for the marginalized. Inspired by his mentor and guru Dadabhai Naoroji, Mulji championed social reform and women’s rights. His unwavering commitment to justice led him to take on the powerful in the infamous Maharaj Libel Case. Details of the case are kept secret, but the film hints at allegations of misconduct against the public figure. This high-profile case captured public attention and led to a landmark court battle that continues to resonate today.
Fast forward to 2024. Maharaj This film revives this forgotten story and brings Mulji’s bravery to life for modern audiences. The film marks the directorial debut of Junaid Khan, son of Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan. Khan takes on the name Mulji and shows his determination to challenge the status quo.
Directed by Siddharth P. Malhotra, the film also features a talented cast alongside Khan, with actor Jaideep Ahlawat bringing his own experiences to the big screen, and rising stars Shalini Pandey and Sharvari Wagh (in a special appearance) rounding out the ensemble.
