Action director Alan Amin, who directed the action sequences in Shah Rukh Khan-starrer ‘Main Hoon Na’, spoke about how he shot a dangerous fight scene using SRK’s cables.

Alan, who was responsible for some of the most innovative and exciting fight scenes, recently shared his first-hand experience of directing Shah Rukh and revealed what it took to craft the superstar’s adrenaline-pumping, helicopter-swung, rickshaw-riding, bomb-dodge performance.
Alan, who was in charge of the action scenes DoomDus and Dhoom 2 and had previously collaborated with SRK in Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani and Dil Se (1998). Talking about the unprecedented cutting edge fight scenes that SRK did in Main Hoon Na, Alan recalls, “He was always clear about what he wanted and I made it simpler and more achievable. Main Hoon Na was the first film to introduce deep freeze. It was 180-degree camera work. We used it in the cycle rickshaw scene,” adding that SRK’s use of cables made the shoot easier and gave the desired results.

Recalling the most challenging scene to shoot in Main Hoon Na – the climax – Alan, who also worked on Kaal, revealed that it was the most challenging scene in Main Hoon Na, where SRK’s character Ram had to run as a building exploded behind him. “We had SRK running first and then we choreographed the explosion. In post-production, we integrated both. You can’t have an actor standing there during an explosion,” he said, adding that the team had to get the timing right. Though the film was full of action and fight scenes, no one was injured.
Farah made his directorial debut He collaborated with director Maine Hoon on the film, which was a huge success. The film was a commercial success and became a pop culture phenomenon in the years that followed. Speaking about working with director Tees Maar Khan, Alan added, “She has a total masala mindset. It was a lot of fun collaborating with her.”

The reviews were good,” Alan said, adding that the success of the film helped him grow in the industry. “Because I did such big action scenes in the film, I became much more well known than I was before. So it was a boon for my career,” he commented.
While praising SRK for nailing the adrenaline-pumping action scenes in Pattern and Jawan, Alan emphasised that, unlike Main Hoon Na, the results were achieved using special effects. “In Main Hoon Na, he did real action. We tethered him to cables and hung him from a helicopter. We made him do all that. In Pattern and Jawan, it’s all done on green screen, so the impact is less,” he said.
