Director Dibakar Banerjee, known for making films like ‘Khosla Ka Ghosla’, ‘Shanghai’ and ‘Sandeep Aur Pinky Faral’, says filmmakers don’t have to worry about being marginalized in the film industry. I believe that. The director said the sense of independence that comes from being on the sidelines helped him come up with a diverse range of films. Banerjee is considered one of the most astute and politically aware filmmakers in Hindi cinema, and he often touches on social and political ills in his films.

Dibakar Banerjee talks about making low-budget films

Director Banerjee may have worked with some of the biggest stars of Bollywood, including Abhay Deol, Emraan Hashmi and Arjun Kapoor, but the filmmaker says his films never belong to mainstream cinema. He said no. “The stars were big, the stars have always been big. And films like mine have always been on the margins, and we have to accept and celebrate the fact that we are on the margins. Because by being on the periphery, you have earned your independence.”

“By not being mainstream, we actually gained the right and strength to be less oppressed and more expressive,” Banerjee told PTI in an interview.

The director said producers are kind to storytellers trying to make low-budget films. “They said, ‘Okay, okay. He’s trying something new. He might lose money, but it’s not a lot of money. And the movie is going to remain in terms of library value. In fact, that’s the only reason people like me survive. Therefore, its liminality must be accepted and embraced. Only by avoiding the mainstream can we be truly free. ”

Dibakar Banerjee wants to explore taboo themes in films

Banerjee said today’s filmmakers are “brimming with talent” but they should be empowered to explore the stories they want.

“When you look at players like Paatal Lok, you see that the talent is all there. But if you get into an environment where you can’t talk about taboos…I understand not talking about incest, but trolls… I think people should be allowed to make movies about incest (on the internet) without fear of being harassed or having their daughter threatened (). I think that needs to happen.”
