What it was like driving a diesel box truck used to make Hollywood movies: Trade on Tuesday

The day portion of Trade-In-Tuesday is a little different. Last week, I climbed a telephone pole to try to charge a Chevy Volt; Before that I pulled a huge axle for scrap on a Midget-equipped Chevy Avalanche. Before that, I had a bad burnout in a Chrysler 300C with a Hemi engine. But this week, things are bigger, more determined, and more twisted than ever. That’s because I drive a Hino 195, a big diesel box truck that was rented out to studios to help them make Hollywood movies. Here’s what was driving this beast.

The Hino 195 box truck is a vehicle you might ignore as it drives by you on the streets, with someone hard at work behind the wheel getting ready to deliver something. big (or a lot Something small). It’s a generic box truck from a company you’ve never heard of — well, unless you’re reading The Autopian.

As you can see, we wrote about Hino A A few times. Mark Tucker wrote about a Hino Contessa and Renault Dauphine-based car he found for sale:

Jason wrote about the one-of-a-kind Hino Contessa “900 Sprint” that was displayed at numerous car shows around the world but never actually reached production:

Speaking of Hino cars, it manufactured the first versions of the Toyota Hilux after the unification of the two companies in the 1960s:

Hino is still part of Toyota, but specializes in commercial vehicles like the one I drove – the 195. Here, watch this week’s episode of Trade-In-Tuesday:

The 195 is a mid-size body-on-frame truck designed for the North American market. It has a 5.0-litre V8 diesel engine mated to a six-speed Aisin automatic transmission, feeding power to the double solid rear axle. It’s honestly quite clear:

The car I drove was part of Galpin Studio Rentals, which is a great part of our sister company’s business model. Here, let me quote Galpin’s upcoming book, which is currently in the works:

Have you ever wondered where the vehicles in your favorite movies and shows come from? There’s a good chance the answer is Galbin.

It all started with Boy’s life, at. Title of the work before its release. The Fairmont and Granada hotels that haunt the mysterious and magical alien were rented from Galpin Rent-A-Car, which had just begun providing comic cars (the cars you see on screen) and other vehicles needed for film and television productions.

Then there it was Back to the future, a now-classic that includes some amazing vintage cars, many of which Galpin helped provide (including a DeLorean). The agency also provided cars for dancing with the wolves, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Young guns, Friday the 13th, The best And The intangible During this era.

In the 1980s, Galpin was busy delivering over 200 minivans, station wagons and double crew cabs each July for the upcoming television season to Universal, Warner Bros., Paramount, 20th Century Fox, Sony and MGM studios.

In the 1990s, Galpin officially founded Galpin Studio Rentals to provide production vehicles and photo cars for film, television and commercial productions, the latter of which was booming at the time. Some of the major feature films Galpin Studio Rentals has been involved in are: Basic instinct, Headstone, Pulp Fiction, Screaming, Mighty ducks, Jurassic Park, Killer instinct, Reservoir dogs, Something about Mary, Stupid and dumber, The mask, The disaster And Titanic.

The 2000s saw Galpin supply vehicles for films such as Gone in sixty seconds, Pearl Harbor, National wealth, Kill Bill, Iron Man, the Hangover 1 & 3, The Fast and the Furious, Pirates of the Caribbean, Spider Man, Training day, pitch perfect, Ocean 8, Rush hour And many other things.

In the late 2000s and into the 2000s, television production boomed and Galpin Studio Rentals found itself working with all the major studios on shows such as: Modern family, blackish, CSI Vegas, scandal, How to get away with murder, shameless, sons of anarchy, Big brother, NCIS Los Angeles, Bush, trance, wipe off, yellowstone, Gray’s Anatomy, how i met your mother, Curb your enthusiasmFor example but not limited to.

With the proliferation of streaming services like Netflix, Apple TV, Hulu, Amazon Prime, etc., the scale of production has increased. Some of Galpin’s recent credits include: Being Ricardos, Flamin Hot, Bam & Tommy Lee, Lincoln attorney, View drawing of the black lady, Ride or die, Babylon, Grace and Frankie, Yeshua, Renault 911, I’m Carly, Ratchet, All Americans, Top Gun: Maverickand more to follow.

Galpin Studio Rentals continues to expand its production vehicle offerings, with makeup and wardrobe trailers joining the mix. Furthermore, the group also rents production supplies and rents events that have nothing to do with vehicles. It’s all part of an impressive growth trajectory for Galpin Motors’ thriving and well-managed Studio Rentals division.

Galpin has been involved in more film, television and commercial productions than any other agency in the world since the 1980s.

cool stuff!

I had the pleasure of using one of the wired controllers that hydraulically raises and lowers the rear deck. It flips down, becomes a flat platform, and then perfectly moves up and down to raise and lower heavy loads. It’s cool, and can work as a lift for a small vehicle; I bet my WWII Jeep would fit on that platform, and it sure as hell would fit in the cargo bay (which by the way has a see-through roof, which I found great, because it meant the inside was always nice and bright (during the day)).

There is a large door on one side of the box, and there is plenty of storage underneath. I found a printer in one of the storage boxes; It appears to be from around 2012:

The interior is fairly straightforward. You have a split bench seat, with a damping system in the driver’s seat! There’s a little knob under the seat that allows you to adjust the damping rate so that if you’re heavy and hit a big bump, the seat won’t go down — it’ll float up like a magic carpet. I can’t overstate how amazing this feature. All cars must have suspension seats!

There’s a dashboard filled with more blank buttons than I’ve ever seen on a single vehicle (which makes sense, as truckers plug in all sorts of accessories), and there’s a standard floor-mounted PRNDL shifter (a waste of space if you ask me; this should be a column shifter ), and there is plenty of storage space in the glove box, door pockets, center console, and dashboard compartments. It’s a decent place to spend some time, but simple.

Before I headed out, I checked the diesel engine, and because the HINO 195 is a cab, that meant I had to turn the cab:

Screenshot 2024 04 02 at 1.05.19 pm

I’ve never done this before, and the instructions threw me for a loop at first. You have to pull and hold certain rods while you pull others, then you have to push the cab forward with all your might, and it’s then held in place via a supporting rod. The cab is set up so that it can be lifted with reasonable ease, but don’t try to do it with a person inside like I did:

Here’s a look at the diesel engine under the cab:

Screenshot 2024 04 02 at 1.07.14 pm

You can see the intake there on the left; When you lower the cab, the top of the intake manifold pushes straight down to complete the intake pipe seal, which runs from the back of the cab (about the same height as the top of the roof) all the way to the turbocharger.

I don’t want to give too much away because I want you to watch this beautifully shot and edited video, but we encountered that^ during a test drive. I have no idea what the hell this is. It’s huge Mass From the duct tape attached to the front of the front driver’s side door of a Honda Civic. It just hangs from the hood all the way to the rocker panel. i am confused.

But what I’m not confused about is the suspension seat I tested along the way Reserve it Over speed bumps. I say suspension seats are for everyone. Suspension seats for everyone.
