Sudhanshu Saria on the experience of shooting Big Girls Don’t Cry
When asked why the series was called Big Girls Don’t Cry, Sudanshu said: “We live in a world where there’s a lot of pressure on women to be perfect. In this world, crying can be seen as weakness. If you’re a teenager, you want to grow up and then we expect you to be big.” Girls don’t cry. It’s actually a very provocative statement. Does it really make us cry? What’s the definition of a big girl? So that was a very interesting question, it’s also an integral part of the narrative.”
Revealing what inspired her to choose the subject, she said, “The show was created by Nitya Mehra. She went to boarding school and wanted to create her own story. I also went to Doon School. We came together. A school for writers with three young girls who are boarding and That’s how the preparations began.”
Speaking about the character development process, Sudanshu told Zoom in“We were very aware of the politics of the show. We wanted to show the whole of India. We didn’t want to take it from a narrow country. We wanted to make sure the characters were from different parts of the country. It’s not a reflection of Bourgeois’s class, but a true reflection of what India is, I mean a boarding school. “.
The casting process of the show lasted 8 months; “We interviewed different people. It was 8 months. We interviewed at least 2,500 girls and over 300 boys. It was an intensive process. We looked everywhere we could look. We didn’t want our audience to look. 30-year-olds like 18-year-olds.” .
She also gushed about the shooting experience, saying, “Shooting was such a party. We went to a real boarding school. It was like a picnic. It was exhausting, too. But a whole new family was created. So much fun.”
It was interesting to see Pooja Bhatt come on board. “She had just done a film called Sana, which also starts Radhika Madan. It was after that shoot that we were looking for a strong, fiery individual for it. So the idea of Pooja was floating around in my brain. So the idea came to Niya. She suddenly shone. And then We were in Ooty, so I called him. He didn’t even ask for the script. He’s like you do it. I’m on it.”
