Showtime writer Sumit Roy calls Bollywood ‘crazy overkill’ and has this to say about producer Karan Johar – EXCLUSIVE
Emraan Hashmi, Nasiruddin Shah, Muni Roy, Rajeev Khandelwaliand Mahima Makwana’s new web series Show time Currently streaming Disney+Hotstar. He is the producer of the series Karan Johar‘s Dharmatic Entertainment and created by Samith Roy. The series mainly deals with the issue of insider versus Bollywood. In a recent interview Zoom inSamit talked about the USP of the series, its impact on the audience, Karan Johar’s reaction after hearing the project and much more!
Sharing the history of the series, Sumit told Zoom in“The journey of this story started 3-4 years ago. Dharmatic came up with the idea that they wanted to show what goes on behind the scenes. There was a lot of talk around Bollywood at that time. There was a lot of talk about insiders. , outsiders and other things. Aur uhan pe jitna information tha utna hi disinformation bhi tha. So hamara farz tha ki logoko batana what is actually happening there. Bollywood is a crazy, over-the-top place and there is a method to the madness and that’s what I tried to capture in Showtime.”
Talking about the audience reaction and support for Karan Johar’s series, the writer told us, “Reaction toh hamara haat mein nahi hai. When I started writing, I knew Dharma ke ek ID hai, brand value ek ek perception hai, but me and my writers were clear that hai Apne life experience hai, and we were very clear that hamara ek apna understand hai, and hum woh sach ko screen mein. representing Karenj. How people will take it knowing that Karan is the producer is up to them, but I will say that when We wrote it and brought it to Karan, he was cool. He said go and I’m behind. You. It shows how cool he is, what a nice guy he is and how supportive of our creative voice he was. Baki logo ke haat mein hai ki what are they doing .”
Sumit also believes that the show can influence the audience’s mind: “We didn’t just make a Bollywood show to entertain. We wanted to make sure that you had some kind of understanding about certain things. I think 2 /3 cheezein jo emerge hokar aya hai, ek relationship between insiders and outsiders And undo the power dynamics. Hi, all of a sudden the insider starts to grow and how the industry reacts to that, we tried to explore that. We tried to explore how the industry reacts when a woman takes a position of power because you don’t have many women in power in the industry today. It’s a culture industry, So if you don’t have a sense in terms of a particular position of power, that affects the story you’re telling. We wanted to explore that. Finally, one thing that was very dear to the writers and creators was the theme of the tyranny of superstars. A lot of things. Happenings in Bollywood It was centered around them – these black holes that suck up all the energy around them, some of them. It was very interesting to study, for example, the influence of a superstar on the making of a film. How they interfere and change the fate of the film”.
Shedding light on Emraan Hashmi’s casting as Raghu Khanna (producer), “This actor came in a very interesting way. I felt Khanna’s character was perfect for Emraan. The swag that Emraan portrays was great. We offered it to him and he jumped at it. He absolutely loved the script. And it was great.”
