Shehzad Khan recalled his father Ajit’s struggles in the film industry. He said he was nervous about the main heroes sharing the screen with him.

Although Ajith is now remembered as one of the most famous villains of the 1960s and his 1970s, he appeared in many supporting roles at the beginning of his career. One of his most acclaimed roles was Dilip.He played a supporting role in Kumar and Vyjayanthimala’s film Nayadaur, for which he won a Filmfare Award.
Shehzad said that after the film, his father did not get any work for four to five years and saw his career decline. “His bad times started after Naya Daur. He had no work for four-five years,” he said in a chat with Siddharth Kanan. When asked why, Shehzad said that the leading heroes were “insecure” and felt that Ajith would steal the limelight from them. “The heroes were worried that if we worked with him, he would win the award and we would not be recognized,” he said.

Recalling another anecdote from his father’s struggling days as a newcomer in Mumbai, he said Ajith had to sleep in the gutter for many days. “He showed me a gutter near Muhammad Ali Road and said he would sleep in that gutter when he came to Mumbai from Hyderabad,” he said. Shehzad said his father actually sold his college textbooks to raise enough money to come to Mumbai.

Ajit passed away in 1998, and a few years later, Shehzad’s mother Sara was diagnosed with cancer. Shehzad said his brothers refused to help share his expenses, even though they were doing well financially. He said the money left by his father was taken to relatives and older brothers, which was why it became difficult for her mother to get treatment. He said, “When her mother died, her brother refused to pay her hospital bill of Rs 5,000. refused to pay.”
Shehzad is famous for playing the role of Bala in the popular comedy film ‘Andaz Apna Apna’.
