Last week, when it was officially announced that true detective Renewed for a fifth season, it was a bit of sweet revenge for new showrunner Issa Lopez. After the show previously aired on HBO and its streaming partner Max (it streams in India on Jio Cinema), this new iteration was panned by a small, disgruntled contingent of fans, who were then fueled by franchise creator Nick Pizzallato.

But in the end, none of this mattered True Detective: The Night Country drew an average of 12.7 million viewers across platforms for each episode. The first season, starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, averaged 11.9 million. The current season, written and directed by Lopez, stars Jodie Foster as Liz Danvers and Callie Reiss as soldier Evangelina Navarro. The story takes place in the remote Alaskan town of Ennis, where snow is abundant and daylight is limited. After eight male scientists disappear from a research station one night, two women reluctantly come together to solve the case and rekindle another unsolved mystery.

Using a dark Alaskan setting, the story night country Cooked over time. Lopez introduced an element that thrilled fans of the first season. Adding more context and connecting to season 1, Night Country discussed the character of Travis Kohl (Earling Eliasson) and his past. He was also the late father of Rusty, played by McConaughey. Another easter egg arrived in the first season in the form of Tuttle United, a family involved in a conspiracy that the first pair of detectives investigate.
