Bhuj: The Pride of India

During the 1971 Indo-Pak war, the IAF airstrip at Bhuj was destroyed in combat. Subsequently, 300 local women led by IAF squadron leader Vijay Karnik heroically toiled day in and day out to reconstruct the airbase. This act of resilience was a pivotal moment which not only boosted the morale of the country, but also helped us win the war.

The film is a tribute to the unparalleled bravado displayed not only by IAF, but the civilians as well.

Bhuj: The Pride of India is an upcoming Indian Hindi-language war action film directed, co-produced and written by Abhishek Dudhaiya. Set during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, it is about the life of IAF Squadron Leader Vijay Karnik, the then in-charge of the Bhuj airport who and his team reconstructed the IAF airbase with the help of 300 local women. The film features Ajay Devgn as Karnik, along with Sanjay Dutt, SonakshSinha, Nora Fatehi, Sharad Kelkar, Ammy Virk and Pranitha Subhash.

After announcing the film on 19 March 2019, it was confirmed that the true incident shown in the film is one of India’s most fascinating war-related stories. Principal photography began in late June 2019, and it was shot in Hyderabad, Kutch, Bhopal, Indore, Lucknow, Mumbai and Kolkata. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the film will not be released theatrically and will stream worldwide on Disney+Hotstar.

Ajay Devgn portrays Vijay Karnik, and he was also the only choice for the role. The other cast included Sanjay Dutt, Sonakshi Sinha, Ammy Virk and Rana Daggubati. The film is Virk’s second Hindi film. South actress Pranitha Subhash later joined the film, making her Bollywood debut.

On 19 March 2019 Bhushan Kumar announced the film on true events of Indo-Pak war. The film depicts the incident from Indo-Pak war of 1971 where three hundred local women helped in reconstruction of destroyed airbase in Bhuj, Gujarat.

Dutt started shooting for the film on 25 June 2019 in Hyderabad. Then, he and the other cast members including Devgn travelled to Bhopal, Indore, Lucknow, Mumbai and Kolkata to commence the next portions of the film. A song, picturized on Devgn and Sinha, was filmed in Kutch in late December 2019.

On June 29, 2020, Ajay Devgn announced that the film will release on Disney+ Hotstar exclusively in late 2020 as a result of theatre closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic in India

Bhuj : Pride of India is a celebration of the 300 women of Madhapur in Gujarat lead by IAF squadron leader Vijay Karnik who played a pivotal part in India’s victory in the 1971 Indo-Pak war. Karnik with his team, with the help of these local women created history by reconstructing the only IAF airstrip at Bhuj destroyed during war. Karnik was lauded for his valiant efforts which saved the day for the Indians. The film will be a tribute to unparalleled bravado displayed by not only Karnik but 300 women from the villages near Bhuj who accomplished this feat.

Talking about the direct-to-digital release, Ajay said in a virtual press conference, “The film is based on a true story. The story is about one day and one night. It tells this story of common people who rebuilt a road overnight to help the armed forces during the 1971 war. We need to have more stories of such bravery and valour.”

During the Disney Plus Hotstar’s virtual press conference on Monday, Ajay Devgn called Bhuj: The Pride of India an interesting film. “After Tanhaji, Bhuj is also based on a true story, the war of 1971. I’m playing a IAF Squadron Leader Vijay Karnik. It’s a very interesting film about how a group of people saved Bhuj from getting taken over during the war. I won’t reveal more than this right now. I think it’s a big scale for me,” Devgn said.

The makers also revealed that Bhuj: The Pride of India celebrates the courage of 300 women of Madhapur in Gujarat, who came together to repair the only runway in Bhuj that was destroyed during the war. Sonakshi Sinha will essay the role of Sunderben Jetha Madharparya, a farmer who convinces the women to help build the runway. Parineeti Chopra will be seen as an Indian spy living in Lahore.

Alongside Bhuj: The Pride of India, Disney Plus Hotstar also announced the digital release of Laxmmi Bomb, Sadak 2, The Big Bull, Khuda Haafiz and Lootcase. It had last week revealed that late actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s Dil Bechara will also premiere on the streaming platform on July 24.

Sonakshi Sinha will play the role of a Gujarati woman named Sundarben in her upcoming film ‘Bhuj: The Pride of India’. The makers released the first look poster of the film and we can’t help but notice how different Sonakshi looks in the poster with tattoos all over her face. The film poster showcases Sonakshi in the get-up of a Gujarati social worker Sunderben Jetha Madharparya with several traditional tattoos on her body as she walks fearlessly amid terror and chaos.
