He added, “Mukta Arts has produced films like Aitraaz and Iqbal and in both films we made them on a budget that was true to the story and paid everyone.”
Guy, who has produced a number of blockbuster hits, stressed that the scale and budget of a story should be determined on an individual basis. “The story will determine the scale, the budget and even the right actors. A great star’s entrance can change the scale of the whole script, along with great songs, action, setting and other elements,” he said.
He further added, “When you scale up a good small story just because a star makes money at the box office for the first few weeks, it ends up being a huge flop.”
Ghai said, “We have made 45 films and I have directed 18, all with proper budgets as per our stories. At Mukta Arts, 37 of the 45 films have been box office hits.”
Talking about his recently produced films, Ghai said, “‘The Kashmir Files’, ‘Kerala Story’, ’12th Fail’ and ‘Shaitaan’ have made good profits thanks to good storylines and workable budgets.”
He acknowledged that stars are important to make a big film and producers have to hire stars. Ghai said, “Star cast films also come on the screens when the stars follow the story, like Animal and Jawan. Some stories require stars but producers have to care about the story first while making a film.”
Asked whether stars needed to take responsibility and should have clauses in their contracts guaranteeing box office success, Guy said: “That’s a fair deal. Some stars have started accepting profit sharing for less money. That’s a better model.”
