Ace film director Santoshi sentenced to 2 years in prison in 2017 bounced check case | Hindi Movie News

Rajkot: Bollywood director and producer Rajkumar Santoshi on Saturday was sentenced to two years in prison and fined Rs 20 crore in a seven-year-old check dishonor case filed by a Jamnagar-based businessman. It was announced.

Santoshi was found guilty under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act by senior civil judge VJ Gadhvi.

According to details of the case, Santoshi’s friend Ashok Lal, who works in the shipping industry, lent Santoshi 1.1 billion rupees in 2016 for the production of a film. Santoshi repaid the money by giving him 10 checks of 1 million rupees each. However, the check was bounced by the bank due to “insufficient funds.”

Lal then sent a legal notice of fraud and demanded the money back, but Santoshi did not comply. Later, Lal filed a civil suit in Jamnagar court in 2017.

Lal’s lawyer Piyush Bhojani said, “We have filed 11 cases against Santoshi as 11 checks handed over by Santoshi have been returned by the bank. Of these, the court decided on 10 on Saturday. “and ordered Mr. Santoshi to pay approximately Rs. 2 rupees, twice the amount in dispute.” Hundreds of billions. ”

During the hearing, Bhojani insisted he had no intention of repaying the money to Santoshi. He could not prove that he had not borrowed this amount from Lal or had repaid it to Lal.

Bhojani said that after filing the civil suit, the government issued a notice stating that suits under the Negotiable Securities Act can only be filed in the city where the bank responsible for receiving the check is located.

According to the notice, Mr. Santoshi has filed an application to transfer all cases against him to a Mumbai court. Lal filed a revision application in the sessions court in Jamnagar against the challenge to the application. However, before the revision application could be decided, the government withdrew the notification and all proceedings against Santoshi were initiated in Jamnagar court.

“Santoshi was evading the summons. The court sought an explanation from the Mumbai Police chief, after which the summons was served,” Bhojani said, adding that even after the summons was served, the producer still went to court for hearing. He added that he did not appear in court. “The court issued a bailable warrant and after we requested the Juhu police, the warrant was served and he was produced in court,” he added.

Mr Santoshi did not appear in court on Saturday when the sentence was handed down. He is known for producing blockbuster films like ‘Damini’, ‘Ghayal’ and ‘Ghatak’.
