Kristen Stewart Goes Viral in Rolling Stone ‘Gayest’ Cover Photoshoot – The Hollywood Reporter
Kristen Stewart wanted to do “the most fun thing” in March Rolling Stone cover.
In the cover story, Stewart talks about her desire to change gender roles as she goes viral. “If you go through the whole thing twilight series without ever doing Rolling Stone “The hood, because the boys were sex symbols,” she says. “Now I want to do the most ridiculous thing you’ve ever seen in your life. If I could grow a little mustache, if I could make a happy trail and unbutton my pants, I would. You guys – I’m sorry – but their fucking pubes are constantly being shoved in my face, and I’m saying “Um, bring it.”
The photos show Stewart wearing tracksuits and basketball shorts, and are photographed in a way that has more in common with Jeremy Allen White’s Calvin Klein campaign than Rolling StonePrevious bikini covers. It quickly went viral on social media, with fans marveling at the opportunity for a gay celebrity to have a hyper-sexualized photoshoot that didn’t cater to the male gaze.
Stewart stars in the upcoming suspense thriller Love lies bleeding Along with Katie O’Brien. She tells Rolling Stone As an “openly gay movie star,” she is happy to act in a film that doesn’t rely on clichés, like “Coming Out.”
The actress sees playing gym manager Lou as a return to her “prime setting,” taking on a role that suits her own aesthetic. “It’s a really strange and poignant return to form in a way. “It’s kind of like who you are when you’re 11 years old — physically, the clothes you choose to wear — before you’re exposed to male expectations,” she says.
Stewart shares that when it comes to the spectrum of queer celebrities, she sees herself “in the middle” between Jodie Foster, Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus and the tomboyish supergroup of Julien Baker. “Jodi had a hard time (as a gay actress), and I’m not speaking on her behalf – I’m objectively analyzing the time and place she was in, which is not easy – I would say she was close to – that’s impossible if you want to continue Do what you love.
She adds: “For me, this was not a problem.” But maybe it’s because of the kind of space I inhabit, the parts I’m drawn to, the filmmakers I’m drawn to, and the audience that exists for those films. If I really wanted to get more commercial space and maintain that, I don’t know if that would have worked or not.
Despite being able to act in films more consistent with her real-life identity, Stewart has struggled to create her own projects surrounding queer stories. She explains that she has been trying for years to adapt Lydia Yuknavitch’s memoir Water chronologywhich delves into the author’s experiences with abuse, the death of her stillborn daughter, a failed marriage, BDSM relationships with women and addiction—topics that Stewart calls “so taboo that they’re almost erotic.”
With Yuknavitch’s approval, Stewart wrote a screenplay, cast Imogen Poots in the role of the author and sought to make the film. However, she learns that making Extreme in a Million Ways is harder than expected, as she struggles to find someone to finance it. “And it makes me so angry. And not in a way like, ‘I’ve been doing this for a long time, so I deserve it.'” It’s more like, “If I were a man, you’d believe me!”
Stewart delves into it as well twilight Days, she spoke about the negative impact that stardom associated with starring in a romantic vampire movie had on her.
She recalled having constant anxiety attacks, which would escalate to the point where she had to lie on bathroom floors, to the point where she was hospitalized one day. They were saying: She is dehydrated. I was like, “I’m not dehydrated.” I flip out. “They gave me an IV and a mild sedative, and I started to calm down and my hand started to open up, because you atrophied,” Stewart says.
The actress adds that for years, she couldn’t enter a room without knowing the location of her exits, and would need to know where the bathroom was in case she “spontaneously combusted in a puddle of vomit.” In addition, Stewart had serious problems with insomnia, to the point where she worried she would die from lack of sleep. “I liked being sad and dirty,” she admits. “Oh my God. I made a whole art project out of it: my whole life.
Stewart also talked about continuing to ask questions about her twilight Co-star and ex-boyfriend Robert Pattinson.
“Rob and I can’t keep talking about this nonsense, because it’s so weird,” she says. “It’s like someone’s been asking you — I mean for decades — ‘But senior year in high school?’ You’re like, ‘Damn, man!’ I don’t know!’”
