Bill Maher weighs in on ‘Barbie’ Oscars controversy in ‘Real Time’ – The Hollywood Reporter
Bill Maher began at presentThe second episode of the new year by taking the opportunity to share his thoughts on Barbie Controversy over Oscar nominations.
After applause from the audience as he took to the stage, the host said, “You can always get excited this time of year when you’re in L.A. because it’s Oscars week or something. … This is a big part of the city and the industry and everything. So we’re excited Extremely.”
Maher noted that the 2024 Oscar nominations were released on Tuesday and Barbie Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig received eight nominations, including Best Picture, but lost out on the awards for Best Lead Actress and Best Director, respectively.
The host commented sarcastically on the matter, saying: “The matter has been handed over to the International Criminal Court and is being investigated for the sake of war.”
During the past few days, Barbie Fans and some Hollywood stars, including Ryan Gosling and Michelle Yeoh, expressed their disappointment over the Academy’s vote to exclude Gerwig and Robbie from those categories. Especially since Gosling, who played Kane in the film, won Best Supporting Actor.
But then, in a twist, the actress began receiving backlash, with some people, like Whoopi Goldberg, saying the actress and director were not being snubbed by the Academy. Goldberg said earlier this week the view“No disrespect, and that’s what you have to keep in mind: Not everyone gets an award.”
Now, Maher has become the latest Hollywood figure to question the online outrage over the slur.
He said: “I don’t know why there is such a big controversy now.” “I mean best actress. This is the category that Robbie lost to the other actresses. It’s not like they gave her spot to Vin Diesel. Is this really the patriarchy?”
Later in the episode, Maher asked guests Rep. Adam Schiff and Seth MacFarlane if they thought that Barbie Contempt means whether America is a patriarchal country or not.
“I don’t think you can judge that by it Barbie “I was not nominated,” Schiff said in response.
Maher also shared his take on the film, which followed Ken and Barbie as they discovered a similar realization about patriarchy when they left Barbieland for the real world.
“I Googled the truth about the Mattel painting. In the movie there are 12 men, and in real life there are seven men and five women, so they were caught lying in their own movie. “I remember seeing it (the movie) in the theater and I liked it, it’s entertaining, but at a stage What, the Barbie dolls have to get the Kanes back, and they do it by acting helpless. The woman I was with said, “I don’t know any woman today who does that.”
Robbie was nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Picture category for her role as a producer in the film, and Gerwig also received a nomination in the Best Adapted Screenplay category.
The other guest in the last episode of at present It was Stephen A. Smith.
