Hollywood legends reveal inspiration for Polish legends – The First News
Polish film buffs were thrilled after Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio cited Andrzej Wojda’s classic Ashes and Diamonds as one of their primary inspirations for the Oscar-winning film The Departed.
Speaking to Letterboxd, the Hollywood legends were asked to “remember the hard-boiled film noir and the fast talk”. FII am inInfluences that have fueled the six features they’ve created together so far.
On the subject of The Departed five minutes into the video, DiCaprio credited the director for urging him to watch Wajda’s 1958 wartime drama first to see Zbigniew Cybulski in one of his most famous roles.
“I was very specific about wanting to see this performance (of Cybulski) and her idea“We’re in Poland fighting World War II, but he’s dealing with a moral dilemma and trying to figure out what’s right,” DiCaprio tells Scorsese.
He added: “The constant anxiety and internal tension felt by the main character in this film had a huge influence on me in making The Departed and playing the role of Billy Costigan.”
Scorsese spares his praise for Cebulski. “First of all I wanted you to see Cebulski. Really, I mean he was going to be known at the level of (Marcello) Mastroianni.”
Describing him as “the James Dean of Europe,” Scorsese then addressed Cebulski’s tragic death a few years later.
Reminiscing about the role played by Cebulski, Scorsese also enjoys DiCaprio’s initial reaction to the actor. “I saw him doing something at the bar, messing around with the girl behind the counter, and I said, ‘This guy is good.’”
“Ashes and Diamonds was very powerful when I saw it,” Scorsese said, comparing Wadjda and The Departed. “This is a guy who’s stuck, and your character in The Departed is also stuck in this war that he didn’t plan. He gets shot, and he doesn’t know why.” His presence there.
“All we know is that in the end he’s trying to figure out what’s right in this world without any morals of any kind. It’s ground zero.”
Even more surprising, Scorsese then revealed his touching tribute to Cebulski. “He had those glasses, and I always used them myself to pay homage to him. In Mean Streets, I always wore them when filming.
The video, which was published yesterday, impressed fans of the Polish film. “Leonardo DiCaprio taking inspiration from a ‘European James Dean’ makes a lot of sense,” one fan wrote on Channel X.
Another wrote: “I knew Marty was a Wajda fan, but omg – Leo watches Popiół i diament and realizes Zbigniew Cybulski got cut! This is huge!”
In a strange coincidence, the interview comes shortly after the anniversary of Cebulski’s death.
At the height of his fame, the 39-year-old actor fell to his death after jumping on a moving train as it was leaving Wrocław station.
He is considered one of the greatest talents of his generation, and his legacy lives on to this day.
