The quintessential Scottish island castle from a Hollywood movie is looking for new residents

An idyllic Scottish castle is looking for new residents – and they’ll also get paid to live there.

Duart Castle, on the Isle of Mull, has featured in a number of Hollywood films including Entrapment, starring Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta-Jones, and When Eight Bells Toll with Anthony Hopkins.

Its current managers are looking for new presidents to take over leadership, after they announced that they would leave the company in the spring due to family commitments.

The ancestral home of Clan MacLean, this landmark is one of the last remaining privately owned clan castles in Scotland.

Alison and Ray Canham wrote in an online post: “We are recruiting a couple who want to be part of Duart’s long history and enjoy working in a busy visitor attraction.

“They will be responsible for the running of the castle, which may include a tea room and shop, all of which are successful businesses in their own right.

“Candidates with a background in catering, retail, hospitality or housekeeping will be considered.

“Experience in a customer-facing environment would be an advantage, but a can-do-right attitude is just as important.”

The castle sits atop a cliff guarding the Sound of Mull, boasting views of Ben Nevis and the Glencoe Mountains.

There are several ways to get to Duart Castle on the Isle of Mull, all of which include a ferry ride.

It takes 45 minutes to sail from Oban to Craignure, and on the return journey this ferry connects with trains and buses on the mainland.

Alison Wray added: “The castle was built in the 13th century, destroyed in the 1750s before being restored in 1912, and is the home of the current chief of the clan, Sir Lachlan Maclean.

“The castle has been open to the public for many years and has been rated by VisitScotland as a four-star visitor attraction due to our outstanding customer service. Our visitors are very important to us.”

As a seasonal employment, successful candidates will be expected to work full time during the summer, from April to mid-October, and when the Castle closes winter hours will be reduced.

In return, potential residents will be offered a two-bedroom “central heated” home and a “competitive” salary.

Interested candidates can email Clan Chief Lachlan Maclean at office@duartcastle.com or post to Duart Castle, Lochdon, Isle of Mull, PA64 6AP.

The deadline for applications is January 12, 2024.
