ETV Win has now launched a 90s web series starring Shivaji, Mouli and Vasuki. This family drama was directed by Aditya Haasan. Let’s see how it is.
story:
Set in Vanaparthya, it’s the 90s, Chandra Sekhar (Shivaji), a government teacher and his middle-class family. Sekhar’s wife, Rani (Vasuki), is a housewife and has three children: Raghu Teja (Mouli), Divya (Vasantika) and Aditya (Rohan). Children are often frustrated by the changes they need in their lives. Sekhar is so strict when it comes to her children’s education. The series takes us on a rollercoaster of emotions that takes place in a middle-class family.
Plus points:
The beauty of the 90s is that it connects well with both the youth and family audiences. We all would have memorable moments in our school life and 90s is a nostalgic trip to relive those beautiful memories. In the beginning, there is a dialogue that the 90s do not have a big story, but there is a simple and cute depiction of moments that happen in our daily lives. So it’s not like watching something cinematic. Everything is very natural in the series.
A considerable number of scenes will cut the mustard with us. Some of these beautiful scenes include waiting for money from relatives when they visit our house, first love at school, trying to watch our favorite TV show when dad is away and scolding mom for cooking something too often. This is something everyone would do in their life and hence the relatability factor is quite high. The director presents all this attractively.
The hilarity quotient is maintained throughout the series. Also, the emotions are well represented. Vasuki’s scene with Shivaji where he explains the hardships he goes through to maintain the house is something most housewives can relate to.
All the artists gave their best in the series. Shivaji plays him as the head of a middle-class family. It is great with both funny and emotional scenes. Vasuki fits right in as a housewife and her performance is amazing. The roles of Shivaji and Vasuki are nothing but a representation of middle class parents.
Mouli, Vasantika and Rohan are the hijackers of the show. The cute little moments between the siblings bring these three to life perfectly. Mouli gets most of the screen time and gives a great performance. Vasanathika and Rohan are lovely and Snehal Kamat makes his mark.
Minus points:
The third episode where Shivaji talks about education in private schools could have been presented better. The pace sometimes slows down a bit and some scenes are repetitive.
As mentioned above, 90’s doesn’t have much of a story and thus it becomes predictable. The editing team could have trimmed down a few sequences for better effect.
Technical aspects:
Suresh Bobili’s music is soothing and contributes beautifully to the lighter tone of the series. Azim Mohammad’s cinematography is quite good. The creators spent what was necessary for the series. The editing is decent and some scenes could have been shortened.
Kudos to director Aditya Haasan for coming up with such a pure family singer. The series is truly an homage to 90’s kids and their parents, combining funny and emotional aspects. Despite its sometimes slow pace, the series is sure to be a hit with family audiences.
Verdict:
Overall, the 90s is good family entertainment with plenty of nostalgia-inducing moments. Like the show’s tagline, The 90s is indeed a middle-class biopic with many interesting and endearing moments. Shivaji, Vasuki, Mouli, Vasantika and Rohan are quite good in their roles. The story is simple and straightforward, but it was presented with warmth. The pace slows down a bit in the middle parts and the length could have been shortened a bit. Still, the 90s are a good watch this weekend. It is recommended.
