Anupriya Goenka talks about the challenges of her new project ‘Sultan of Delhi’ with filmmaker Milan Luthria. The show will be released on Disney + Hotstar on Thursday. In an exclusive interview with Hindustan Times, the actor also spoke about his debut in Bollywood and the experience of shooting the Telugu film Pathshala. Anupriya talks about Milan’s filmmaking style

Talking about the difficult part of producing the show, Anupriya said, I grew as an actor in that field. Up until now, I’ve written very conversational lines, so at first I thought, “Oh my god, how can I do this naturally?” Also, what I tried to do was not play a typical vamp-like character that you often see in movies. It took two and a half hours to prepare the set each day. I was also afraid of making mistakes. ”

Director Anupriya also said, “Miran sir was the only one who had more celebrity presence than anyone else. We grew up watching his films and he has done so many films. “He has a way of making films that are completely flashy and commercial, but also down-to-earth and real.” A down-to-earth character.

Anupriya’s vampire role

Talking about her role in the new Disney+ Hotstar show, Anupriya says, “I am very excited about my role in the new Disney+ Hotstar show. She is a person in her 60s who has been abused by men and now she wants to sit at the table and decide things for her. She does not hesitate to use her sexuality and does not want to remain in the shadow of her man. This was her first negative character for me and she had me in awe of her. I kept trying to find the backstory, why she ended up this way. It was difficult for me to empathize with her. ”

Anupriya also revealed that working on the show has clouded her judgment. “I was able to be less judgmental because I realized I didn’t need the justification or backstory[I was looking for]. Men do things like that all the time, but I don’t feel like asking them for an explanation. But here I tried to do her justice. Only after a while did I see that she was allowed to be herself, even if it was bad. I grew a lot by working on it.”

“Troublesome” experience working with Pathshala

Recalling her first Hindi film ‘Bobby Jasoos’, Anupriya said that Vidya Balan and producer Dia Mirza helped her navigate the film industry as a newcomer. “This was my first Hindi film. Before that, I had already done two Telugu films. One of them did well, but the other one, My Paraeshan Ho Gai Thi ( The shooting of ‘Paathshala’ lasted for 10 months. But it was something I was looking forward to having more of an ‘artistic experience’. This was my first film, and the way it was made was (anxious). ”

bollywood debut

Anupriya recalled that Pathshala was shot in Hyderabad and soon Bobby Jasoos’ shooting brought her back to the same street and house in Hyderabad. “How creepy! The best thing about working with Bobby Jasoos has to be Vidya Balan. I have always been a fan of Vidya and Samar (director Samara Sheikh) is a great collaborator, actor and producer. Dia was so helpful as she knew how to bridge the gap between actors and producers and gave me that space as well… She told me, ‘We’re here.’ , made us feel ‘we have you’. It was a great experience thanks to Vidya and Dia. ”

“I always had a plan B.”

Anupriya also said that she did not feel any extra stress due to not being able to get movies. “I started working right after school. It helped my father and my family. When I quit my job, I had already moved to a new house in Mumbai with my family. I knew I needed to put food on the table. I was very aware of that, and I knew that if that didn’t happen, I would stop acting. That’s when commercial acting started. I was just floating. Of course, there was anxiety and fear, but… I never set goals, I always had a plan B. Plays psycho killer in new movie

When asked about playing a psycho killer in Vinay Pathak’s Gabbar, Anupriya said, “I loved it and it was very well done. Vikram Kochar and Rajeev Thakur are also part of it. I wanted to explore a darker character because I’ve played righteous characters (in my career up until now). This movie, despite being dark, is in a comical space. What’s interesting is that she is comical and , is bombastic, fun, hilarious, and a psycho killer. There’s a story within a story within a story.”

Comparison with Smita Patil

Anupriya also recalled meeting director Mukesh Bhatt and said he reminded her of her best friend Smita Patil. “I met Mukesh Bhatt a long time ago. I wasn’t doing much work then, but Smita Patil has been my inspiration for a long time. He reminded her, “You remind me of a dear friend.” When I think of something about you, I think of Smita Patil.
