For now, it doesn’t look like 2024 will deliver a massive slate of films in the way Hollywood, which is still dealing with the impact of the Covid pandemic and recent strikes, had hoped.

Several films that were scheduled to be released next year have now been postponed to 2025, including Tom Cruise’s upcoming “Mission: Impossible” and Disney’s live-action “Snow White.”

However, the year still boasts a slew of big-screen offerings, from Oscar-nominated films early in the year — to crowd-pleasing summer and fall favorites.

Here are 10 movies to look forward to in 2024.

It was originally scheduled for release in 2023, but had to be postponed due to Hollywood strikes.

Although the film was completed and could have theoretically been released as planned, the stars were not allowed to carry out promotional work during the strike, resulting in it being postponed until the next year.

The first film was an amazing success. This sequel is expected to narrate the second part of Frank Herbert’s epic novel. Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya return, while newcomers include Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan.

Writer-director George Miller has been making “Mad Max” movies on and off for more than 40 years, interspersed of course with films at the other end of the spectrum like the heart-warming “Babe.”

Max’s previous film, ‘Fury Road’, was his fourth. The film, starring Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron, won six Oscars. This fifth visit to the Mad Max universe is a prequel centered around Theron Furiosa’s character, and stars Anya Taylor-Joy in her previous role.

5. From inside to outside 2

This is a sequel to the hit 2015 Pixar film, which showed how 11-year-old Riley was affected and controlled by the basic emotions present in her mind – joy, anger, fear, disgust and sadness.

In this follow-up, Riley is now a teenager, and it looks like things might get even tougher when a whole new emotion comes along to join the others – anxiety!

6. I am despicable 4

“Despicable Me 3” grossed more than US$1 billion (€780 million) at the global box office in 2017, so it was perhaps inevitable that this sequel would eventually arrive.

Plot details are still scarce, but there have been some suggestions that it will see the adopted children of supervillain Gru (Steve Carell) become more deeply involved in the anti-villain bond of Gru and his wife Lucy (Kristen Wiig).

7. Deadpool 3

Deadpool, the foul-mouthed hero, may be an anomaly among big-screen comic book stars. But he’s someone the fans have embraced.

This film will see him firmly wrapped in the usually cleaner Marvel Cinematic Universe. In this as-yet-untitled sequel, Ryan Reynolds returns as Deadpool and is joined by Hugh Jackman, reprising his role as Wolverine from the X-Men franchise.

Joaquin Phoenix won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role as aspiring comedian Arthur Fleck aka the Joker in the first film of 2019. At the film’s conclusion we see him locked up in Arkham Asylum.

The trailer for this sequel reveals that he is still imprisoned, but has built a relationship with his psychiatrist Dr. Harleen Quinzel (Lady Gaga) before finally escaping, intensifying their relationship as she in turn becomes Harley Quinn.

9. Poison 3

This is the third film starring Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock, a tenacious investigative journalist whose body also hosts an alien symbiotic life form. Something that gives him superpowers and an evil ego.

Little has been revealed about what’s happening this time, and at this point there’s not even a title. It marks the directorial debut of Kelly Marcel, who wrote the first two Venom films, as well as Saving Mr Banks and the big-screen version of Fifty Shades of Grey.

10. Gladiator 2

Following on from the 2000 original, this sequel focuses on Lucius, who we last saw as the nephew of Joaquin Phoenix’s Commodus in the first film.

An older Lucius, played by Paul Mescal, returns after more than a decade in the wilderness. Newcomers to the cast include Denzel Washington and Pedro Pascal, while Connie Nielsen and Derek Jacob, who were in the original, are back.
