Josh Kramer, the veteran Hollywood executive who has produced films such as Roman Polanski’s Death and the firstborn And Sidney Lumet Night falls on ManhattanHe died after suffering a stroke. He was 67 years old.
Kramer died on November 27, surrounded by family and friends in Santa Monica, according to a representative. The producer, who graduated from the American School in London, earned his bachelor’s degree from Brown University where he is said to have left a mark creating conceptual art pieces. He then earned an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
He began his career in the entertainment industry working in foreign sales for legendary Italian producer Dino De Laurentiis, specializing in international pre-sales for films by directors such as Sam Raimi, Michael Cimino, Bruce Beresford, David Cronenberg and others. One such title he sponsored was the popular documentary Madonna: Truth or Dare.
Kramer went on to team up with Thom Mount to form the company Mount/Kramer in the early 1990s. During their time together, they produced the 1994 film Polanski Death and the firstbornstarring Sigourney Weaver, Ben Kingsley and Stuart Wilson, as well as the 1996 film Lumet Night falls on ManhattanStarring Andy Garcia, Richard Dreyfuss, and Lena Olin.
His resume also includes stints at Capitol Films in London as head of sales and a position in international acquisitions at MGM Studios. In 2005, Kramer and his family moved to Bainbridge Island, Washington, outside Seattle, where he began his career at Amazon as the first licensing executive for Amazon Unbox. He and his team are credited with expanding Amazon Video through deals with TiVo, Sony, Samsung, Panasonic, Vizio, Roku and others.
Kramer went on to work as Director and Head of Motion Picture Business Operations at Amazon Studios from 2014-2018. During that period, he worked on early film projects such as Spike Lee’s film Chi racKenneth Lonergan’s Oscar-winning film Manchester by sea And Michael Showalter The big patient. After leaving Amazon Studios, Kramer initially served as managing partner at Resonance Content and later founded his own blockchain-focused company, BKopy.io, in 2021.
On the personal side, Kramer combined many passions, including time spent as a classical pianist, published author of short novels, potter, knitter, and, like his father, a self-taught computer expert. He had recently started an acting class.
Kramer is survived by his wife Kathy, son Jack, brother Ken and an extended family of cousins, nieces and nephews.
