“It’s not about traditional time travel,” Christopher Nolan explains to Tent with Popcorn. Explores the direction of time through entropy’ | hollywood news
One of Christopher Nolan’s lesser-known films that received polarizing reviews, Tenet However, it has created a dedicated fan base that appreciates its unique concept and style of filmmaking. This was one of the main criticisms of the film It was very ‘confusing’.
Known for making films full of concepts, Nolan has now stepped forward to explain Tenet and its complexities. In a new video featured on the TikTok channel @guywithamoviecamera, Nolan discusses the concept of a 2020 sci-fi actor. The video begins with the director admitting that it’s harder to discuss than just watching, understanding, or “feeling” it.
Nolan further explained that Tenet is not about traditional time travel, but rather explores the “direction of time” through entropy. “All the laws of physics are symmetrical; they are all identical no matter which way time goes, unlike entropy.
He continued: “Now, there is a debate in the world of physics about whether entropy determines the direction of time or whether it only shows the direction of time. Whether it is a cause or a product.”

He stressed that “Tenet embraces the idea that entropy is the cause. What happens in the movie is that instead of simply moving forward and backward through time, machines have been developed that can change the direction of time for an object or person. So, you’re mixing both directions of time in the same scene, in the same frame.
“You don’t have to look at cause and effect as defined by one coming before the other. There’s nothing in the laws of physics that says you can’t look at time in a different direction,” Nolan noted.
“So, the scene where the protagonist puts his hand on the inverted bullet and it jumps into his hand,” the director explained with popcorn in his hand, “you make it happen; whether you drop the bullet or not, whether the bullet flies into your hand or not. It has to be your hand.” It must be your will that makes this happen.
“If the same popcorn kernel were going in a different time direction, it could have gotten into the hand. In the movie, we assume that’s because the entropy is reversed. That’s how Tenet, like the title, was created as a palindrome.
