Maqbool Director Haider recently revealed some misgivings he had about his 2017 film Rangoon, starring Kangana Ranaut, Shahid Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan, among other things. Vishal said he doesn’t regret any creative decisions in the film, but he certainly has regrets about how it ended.

Vishal said at noon. “I should have walked into Rangoon and said I don’t care about the release date. The VFX in the last scene is not okay… that kind of pressure. Everyone was like, ‘No, that’s going to be a huge loss…’ “Then you should be Sanjay Leela Bhansali. No matter how much you lose, things won’t go that way.”

Vishal also said that Rangoon was made on a budget of Rs 35 billion, whereas it needed Rs 70 billion. He said that it was a mistake to accept a lesser amount as the film’s budget as he became overconfident after directing Haider. “You regret that decision. I don’t regret the creative idea about Rangoon. It was so pure, so unique. But of course I didn’t want to make a movie that should have been made for 70 million rupees. If I decide to make it for Rs 35 million, I am a fool,” he said.

The director also said that Rangoon should have been disowned, just like Shekhar Kapur. He cited the example of The Four Feathers, which, according to Vishal, was disowned by Shekhar two years after its release. “I should have learned something from Shekhar Kapur and quit films,” he says with a laugh. Vishal said he was “abandoned” by his VFX supervisor because he wanted to make his own short film, but added, “I don’t blame others for my mistakes.”

Vishal Bhardwaj recently directed the Netflix film ‘Kufiya’.
