Why Mr. and Mrs. Smith Season 2 should be rebooted once again with new popularity
Amazon Prime Video series starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine on an emotional cliffhanger. For season 2, which is a big possibility, we think the action comedy should be rebooted with new actors at the helm.
Why Mr. and Mrs. Smith Season 2 should be rebooted once again with new popularity
Mr. and Mrs. SmithThe series is a radical departure from Doug Liman’s 2005 film starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. The biggest difference lies in how the series and the film approach relationships and communication. In the Amazon Prime Video series, John Smith (Donald Glover) is paired with Jane Smith (Maya Erskine) by a secret spy agency. They have to complete tasks and missions by an unknown person and they have three chances, after which there will be consequences.
In the series, John and Jane also discover that they are like them. And therein lies the big key to this reboot show. Using the basis of a spy agency, Mr. and Mrs. Smith Could take a fresh approach for season 2 starting with a new John and Jane Smith.
Mr. and Mrs. Smith is a dark comedy thriller that revolves around marriage (spoilers ahead!)
In the 2005 film, Pitt and Jolie’s John and Jane had no idea they were both spy-assassins and were hiding secret lives from each other. Here, these Smiths enter this “marriage” not knowing much about each other. Obviously, John and Jane are not their real names. But the two strangers were thrown in the deep end from day one. They have to forge a relationship and finally have real feelings for each other. In many ways, their relationship is also like an arranged marriage that grows stronger over time.
When John and Jane meet another pair of Smiths (Wagner Moura and Parker Posey), they strike up a strange friendship with the senior agents. But it is clear that agents are interchangeable. In the opening minutes of the first episode, we see a couple played by Alexander Skarsgård and Eiza Gonzalez being hunted by masked gunmen. It is clear that they are another pair of Smiths on the run.
The agency, which Glover’s John likes to call “Heehee,” doesn’t like deserters and is cleaning up any loose ends. In the final episode of Season 1, when the main John and Jane are holed up in the panic room of their New York brownstone, it becomes clear that it’s make or break for them. And the series ends without properly closing their story.
co-creator Francesca Sloane On Season 2 of Mr. and Mrs. Smith
After the show premiered online, creator and writer Francesca Sloan said there was more story to tell in this world. Sloan, who worked with Glover on the show, told Entertainment Weekly: “We really feel like it’s a perfectly satisfying story if it just lives on its own. But it definitely has more legs to go on, that’s for sure. The whole season is trying to subvert the genre, But it’s still really satisfying for people who love the movie, and I think people who love the movie are going to be incredibly pleased with the ending of our finale. I feel like we really earned the finale in its glory, but I also feel like people who haven’t even heard of Mr. And about the original Miss Smith IP, looking at it and feeling like it’s a well-rounded, exciting, shoot-’em-up novel with a really interesting ending. And I think that ending is something that a lot of people will talk about.”
Sloane’s candid response gives us hope for a surprising change for Season 2. In the first season itself, Mr. and Mrs. Smith employed a number of guest stars, including Paul Dano, John Turturro, Sharon Horgan, Billy Campbell, Sarah Paulson, Ursula Corbero, Ron Perlman, and Michaela Coel. The new season may feature a new John and Jane Smith adventure. It’s a new way to keep things fresh for a new season unless the writers imagine Glover and Erskine’s characters on the run. Either way, we’re excited to see The Smiths back, but with more action on the horizon.
