Paddington 2 (2017)
With “Wonka” heading to theaters on December 15, it’s the perfect time to revisit “Paddington 2,” the final film from director Paul King. Although universally beloved as a non-nostalgic children’s film, “Paddington 2” is among the most popular films of its time; Vibrant, exhilarating, full of hilarious performances – Hugh Grant and Brendan Gleeson are perhaps the most entertaining of all – and unabashedly optimistic about anyone’s potential for good.
National Treasure (2004)
“National Treasure” is a rarity in the modern era, a cheerful, old-fashioned adventure film that veers into Americana exploitation camp, but that frankly makes it all the more special and admirable. Nicolas Cage plays a historian named Benjamin Franklin Gates, who goes on a mission to find a lost Masonic treasure, the hidden map on the back of the Declaration of Independence. It’s a silly adventure, and it knows it, a satirical adventure that’s not afraid to have a good time and rely on Cage’s unique leading man charm.
Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood (2019)
Quentin Tarantino recreates and reimagines the bravado, glamor and sleaze of 1969 Hollywood with Tarantino’s signature set pieces in the 2019 drama Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood. Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt play movie star Rick Dalton and stuntman Cliff Booth, respectively. “Once Upon a Time” highlights a transformative moment in the film industry, following the duo through the streets and sets of Los Angeles, from boxing with Bruce Lee to a tour through Charles Manson’s compound.
Ever After (1998)
Among the many, and most charming of many, adaptations of Cinderella, “Ever After” reinvents the tale by dropping Drew Barrymore’s version of the fairy-tale character into Renaissance France and presenting the tale as historical fiction — including Leonardo da Vinci as “Fairy Godmother.” Prepare to hear Barrymore’s British accent, but the actress is otherwise at the peak of her endearing powers, as charismatic and relentlessly beautiful as the literary character defined by her kindness. The film also looks absolutely beautiful, all neutrals, blushes and soft blues, with gorgeous locations and elegant costumes. Anjelica Huston naturally plays the evil stepmother as well.
Magic Mike XXL (2015)
Feel-good throughout, surprisingly sweet and unsurprisingly sexy, “Magic Mike XXL” brings the boys back together for a stronger, better sequel. Channing Tatum plays the steady leader of his vaunted band of male strippers, but this time, the film follows them on a road trip to Myrtle Beach, creating more space for this colorful band. It’s lighter and goofier than the first film, but it still has all the heart that turned “Magic Mike” into a surprisingly successful franchise. Hulu also has the underappreciated 2023 original “Magic Mike’s Last Dance,” which replaces roughness with romance, sending Mike to London, where he stages a production based on his life finally finding love.
The Matrix (1999)
You can never go wrong with The Matrix, the defining action film of its era, which radically changed the way American events have been made ever since with its extravagant spectacle, inter-world narrative and overzealous embrace of visual effects. – Old-fashioned fighting sequences. Hulu currently has the original trilogy, and the faithful, if unseen, sequel to 2021’s “The Matrix Resurrections” will arrive on December 10.
Crazy Rich Asians (2018)
Director Jon M. Chu’s stunning romantic comedy features extravagant spectacle and eye-popping romance, but the real killer is its cast. Michelle Yeoh is at her most elegant and commanding, Henry Golding is the most handsome prince and Constance Wu is engaging as the heroine of this class struggle romance. “Crazy Rich Asians” revitalized the romantic comedy genre and expanded the range of stories being told at the same time. It’s a dazzling, effervescent film.
