George Santos film in development at HBO Films – The Hollywood Reporter
There’s a movie about George Santos in development at HBO Films, Hollywood Reporter Confirmed Saturday.
HBO Films has optioned the rights to Mark Chiusano’s book, Superstitious: Lying, Hustling, Fraud, Stealing, and the Very American Myth by George Santoswhich was released on November 28.
The film is directed by Frank Rich (HBO’s vice president And Succession) is described as a “grimly criminal and comedic look” at the unprecedented congressional race on Long Island, New York, that led to Santos’ election to Congress.
The announcement of the film comes days after Santos became the first member of the US House of Representatives to be expelled in more than 20 years. He is also the sixth House member in history to be impeached by his colleagues.
The film is set to be written by HBO’s Mike Makowski Bad education), who will also executive produce with Rich. Chiusano will serve as a consulting producer.
According to the tagline, the film tells “the story of a seemingly small local race that ended a battle for the soul of Long Island, unexpectedly charting the path for the world’s most famous (and now disgraced) congressman.” A Gatsby-esque journey of a man from nowhere who took advantage of the system, waged war on truth, and defrauded one of the wealthiest districts in the country to achieve his American dream.
Since arriving in Washington nearly a year ago, Santos has found himself embroiled in numerous scandals. Most recently, the bipartisan House Ethics Committee released a report detailing allegations that the disgraced congressman made false campaign statements and used donor money to fund his lavish lifestyle. He was also indicted on 23 federal charges, including wire fraud and money laundering, to which he has pleaded not guilty.
