(CNN) – Finding a story worthy of a sequel is a challenge faced by many Hollywood films, but for Wrexham Football Club, owned by actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McIlhenney, the next chapter is writing itself as it confirmed its promotional credentials on Saturday and looks to continue its run. Stratospheric path.

Matching last season’s drama seemed an almost impossible task. After all, Wrexham has become so steeped in stardust that Hollywood actors from Will Ferrell to Paul Rudd have made the trip to the Welsh town; Promotion to the Football League was secured after a 15-year absence in front of ecstatic fans in April; A Disney+ documentary welcomed viewers to Wrexham City, as well as Wrexham FC.

Life in League Two initially proved more difficult, but as the holiday season approached, Wrexham established themselves as promotion contenders again on the next trip up, finishing second, five points behind Stockport County.

The Red Dragons confirmed their credentials on Saturday with a resounding 6-0 win over Morecambe, capped by a hat-trick from striker Paul Mullen.

Reynolds and McIlhenney were among those to praise the team’s performance on social media, both hailing it as “amazing”.

Joel Senior’s own goal opened the scoring after just five minutes as he botched an effort to clear danger from Mullen’s cross, before Mullen scored his first goal of the day less than two minutes later.

The third goal came before the end of the first half thanks to a wonderful individual effort from Jacob Mendy, as he crossed the defense in the middle of the penalty area and shot the ball into the net.

Mullen added two more goals for his first hat-trick of the season and James Jones completed the extra-time rout as Wrexham climbed to second place in League Two.

It marked a return to form for Wrexham after their 11-game unbeaten run was interrupted last weekend by defeat at Accrington Stanley, who currently sit in seventh place.

Wrexham coach Phil Parkinson told the BBC: “We’re not used to losing and it hurts to lose. It doesn’t matter how many games you manage, it never gets easier.”

“You could feel there was determination in the group and what a way to respond with a crushing 6-0 victory.

“So obviously we’re very happy and it’s a good day’s work for us because Morecambe is a dangerous team on the counter-attack.”

With just over half the season left to play and a host of teams at the top of the table vying for four promotion places, the end of Wrexham’s story this season is far from certain, but it promises more drama.
