Wish: This Disney movie tries to find the magic in familiarity | hollywood news
Although the story is predictable, the film has many fun moments and catchy songs and lines
Although this new animated film from Disney doesn’t offer anything entirely new, it does bring together enough feel-good elements from the studio’s much-loved cinematic universe to showcase the adventures of another plucky young woman, Asha (which means “hope” in Hindi). . The musical collections pack a lot of appeal and loads of songs, magic and conflicts for a fun ride that will make perfect family viewing with little ones.
The film draws on the nostalgia associated with classic tales, and boasts a talented cast that includes Academy Award-winning actress Ariana DeBose, who plays Asha; Chris Pine as Magnifico; Angelique Cabral as the graceful Queen Amaya and Alan Tudyk as Valentino, Asha’s favorite goat. The film is directed by director Chris Buck (“Frozen”, “Frozen 2”) and Fawn Veerasunthorn (writer of “Raya and the Last Dragon”) – both of whom have successful titles to their credit. Thematically, the film, which celebrates Disney’s 100th anniversary, appears to be inspired by the song “When You Wish Upon a Star” that appeared in the 1940 film Pinocchio.

The beating heart of Wish is the lively public Asha. She feels the darkness in the heart of Magnifico, king of the Rosas, an island town in the Mediterranean with a fairytale-like charm. The handsome Magnifico, who loves himself more than anything else, is also a charmer. He makes the residents of Rosas hand in their wishes once they turn 18 in hopes that one day he will grant them. While interviewing with Magnifico for his apprentice job, Asha realizes that he has no plans to fulfill most desires at all. This eventually leads to a confrontation between the two. The conflict between them intensifies when Asha finds an ally in a star who looks like Flapper and has magical powers, and Magnifico wants to get it.
While the basic idea behind this film – a powerful ruler who takes away the dreams and hopes of citizens – is interesting, the 98-minute film never becomes engaging. The film chooses to keep the story fairly uncomplicated. Songs by singer-songwriter Julia Michaels and Benjamin Rice add to the film’s upbeat atmosphere. It is performed well by DeBose and Pine. The arrival of the golden-hued star adds some excitement to the narrative as the sprinkling of stardust on the bushes, plants and animals makes them magically come to life as they talk, dance and sway.
Although the story is predictable, the movie remains entertaining as it has some fun sequences and catchy lines. As the protagonist, Asha may not be able to outshine many of her Disney predecessors, but she certainly makes her mark alongside Queen Amaya, who demands what she deserves.
